Microsoft Teams - "Open with the desktop app" default setting has disappeared

Microsoft has given everyone a taste of a feature and let everyone get used to using it.

Then they decide to take it away from everyone and tell everyone that if you want to keep using it, you now have to pay more than double the price for your subscriptions.

100 users using Premium license at $22 = 2200 month

100 users using E5 at $57 = 5700 month

How is this cost effective for anyone to upgrade in order to keep using a feature that Microsoft originally gave to customers.

this is the worst rug pull and scam ever by Microsoft.

how can you expect users to pay such high upgrade costs.

Premium license comes with Intune.

switching to E3 takes away the Intune but lets you open files in App instead of browser which has limited features.

This is horrible.

The only license that does not remove features from a Premium license is the E5 and that is more than double.

So if someone is using a Premium license, the only option they have is to go from paying $22 per user (Premium License) to paying $57 per user (E5 License) just to be able to use the open in App feature in Microsoft Teams. That is horrible.

I'm not sure if this is an intermittent issue or a bug, I also experience the same issue both on the web app or desktop app as you can see in the screenshot below.

I do believe this issue needs to be investigated furthermore by the MS Team engineering team so they can determine the best next steps for this particular issue. I highly suggest you report this issue, If this is a bug normally they will release fixes but as a community advisor, I can't guarantee that for you since I don't work for Microsoft.

I second this too, MS please rethink your approach. For months on end I've continued to be frustrated by the lack of this feature. I was jarred into realizing this issue the moment I moved from a prior Fortune 50 company who had E3 licenses to a small firm who doesn't.

And I'll also mention here that native links to Teams files/folders also seem very broken (some search results from others also confirm this) with the lower tier license. The Teams links worked fine with the E3 licenses at prior company. Very Sad!

i just spoke with Microsoft and all they can say is "Sorry"

Microsoft gives a product to customers, allows them to use the product, never suggests that it is some sort of trial bases and now they just take it away and say "Sorry" if you want it back you have to pay for it.

Oh and you have to pay more than double what you are paying now since the only comparable license to the Premium license is an E5 license.

How is this a good busines model for Microsoft to rug pull its customers in such a way.

never have i been treated so bad by customer support just telling me "sorry" we only fix broken issues. your problem is not something that is broken and there is no one that can help you. You just simply need to upgrade to our higher license.

How can Microsoft expect a customer to go from paying roughly $5,000 monthly to paying now more than $12,000 monthly. Just to get back the same feature that they were already using previously.

You're using the wrong path, it's: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun*Configuration*

And the regkey to change is "ProductReleaseIds"
