I tried commenting on an article for the first time today. When i went to sign up and agree to the terms a window said in red letters "The username violates our guidelines"...

my username is my first and last name so I don't understand why I'm seeing this. There is no option to dispute on screen https://account.microsoft.com/profile?ocid=msedgntp

I think they fixed it! I didn't do anything and when I clicked to add a comment, it came right up with my name!

I'm a software developer, so I felt it was a bug.

    Thanks for the update.

I made it happen. See my answer below. But, like you I started with a blank username.... finally I iterated thru creation, logging out, refreshing and logging back into the article discussion's page and it found me.

Question: Has anyone had received this error message using an account that was created recently? (Say the last 6 month to a year?)

I probably created my Microsoft account 15 to 10 years ago.

I'm wondering if the bug has to do with improperly migrated accounts that are causing this fairly new interface to pull up blank for a name rather than your actual name.

I am neither left nor right and have rarely posted any comments online. My user (real) name can't be that offensive. I still got this violation.

Not months. This same issue goes back for years.
