I tried commenting on an article for the first time today. When i went to sign up and agree to the terms a window said in red letters "The username violates our guidelines"...

my username is my first and last name so I don't understand why I'm seeing this. There is no option to dispute on screen https://account.microsoft.com/profile?ocid=msedgntp

It would appear this Microsoft issue is not due to the moderators/Microsoft getting in on the very real and very worrisome trend of censoring opinions from the right in comment sections/videos/podcasts etc etc. (ALTHOUGH NONE OF THE SOLUTIONS HAVE WORKED FOR ME). <political content removed> It is not far fetched in the least to assume Microsoft has joined Google/FB/Twitter/NYT/WaPo etc in various types of censorship.

It is straight up happening and there are plenty of real world examples. The fact you are so quick to dismiss it is simply because you are on the other side of it and are not feeling or seeing the repercussions or you like it is happening. We do agree on one thing....our country is

I'm a progressive with the same problem. I have a had a Microsoft account for decades. The other theory is old accounts are getting this error. Not everything in the whole world is due politics or "wokeness" or some other stupid thing. We've become a third world country where paranoia and conspiracy theories prevail.

Actually, I think you can fix the issue by attempting to join the Community via another method. For me, loading the MS Start Application on my Android allowed me to join the Community. The MS Start app on Android does a better job of fetching your username and then populating it in the Community join dialog box.

I am sure there are other methods like loading the MS Start app on iPhone and joining that way...although I don't know 100%. For me, it worked using the method above.

I would keep trying in favor of opening another account. Every account you have affects your IT security posture. If anything, find accounts you don't use anymore and delete them :)

    Thanks.

I guess one conspiracy theory is as good as another. It's not political, but it is annoying.

I found by using another browser I was able to register. Now having said that, what is truly annoying is that every windows pc in this house now logs in as "An Individual". I love microsoft ..... I just have to keep saying that.
