I tried commenting on an article for the first time today. When i went to sign up and agree to the terms a window said in red letters "The username violates our guidelines"...

my username is my first and last name so I don't understand why I'm seeing this. There is no option to dispute on screen https://account.microsoft.com/profile?ocid=msedgntp

Thank you very much! This worked for me! No need to do the Rewards thing. Just installed the Microsoft Start - app (I did it on iOS not Android), signed in and tried to comment below any news. It came up with the Join Community pop-up where, in contrast to the browser version, it populated the user name according to the real name of my Microsoft account. I confirmed and now the community profile is usable also from Edge desktop!

Hi, I tried doing that on the MSN page and it's not very helpful because it only shows options for language and content, along with personalizing news feeds. Is there another way to fix this problem?

As many have pointed out in this chain of communication, it seems as if when signing up for Community using certain avenues the username is blank. A blank username violates the user guidelines.

It would be good if you could show a screenshot of the sign up portion of the community join process.

    Sort of like this one...

Here, you can see that the username line is actually blank. This is what seems to be happening to most people.

Please post back when you can check to see if this is what is happening to you.

    Thanks

No need to be hysterical. It's a bug. Microsoft does this all the time and ignores most bug reports. When they are too lazy to fix them, they just close the support request as "by design".
