How to Cancel Windows 11 update?

I also downloaded Windows 11 but put the installation on pause for a later date. After I thought about it a few days I decided to try to do a system recovery. I went into the Control Panel, opened system restore and chose a recovery date three weeks prior to my downloading Windows 11. I hit OK and held my breath. It took my computer an hour to recover but IT WORK!!!!!! No more Windows 11. To check and make sure Windows 11 was gone, I brought up "Windows Update". Windows Update asked me if I wanted to download and install Windows 11 or stay on Windows 10 for now. I choose Windows 10 and that was it. Windows 11 download all gone. The only thing I had to do was make sure my updates for Windows 10 were current since I had backdated my computer. All I can say is that it worked for me. Good Luck

Just 2 days ago I finally did take the plunge and edited the registry. I carefully followed the instructions and when I restarted my computer as instructed, Windows 11 was gone. I had also thought about a system restore but was worried I would lose certain files or programs and did not want to take that chance.

I'm happy for you that your strategy worked. I hope you don't have Windows 11 rear its ugly head again on your computer.

With the registry change, Windows 11 can never download as it is set for my target version of Windows.I don't even think I'll see some option to stay on Windows 10 like you did because as far as my computer is concerned, Windows 11 doesn't exist.

Congratulations, Portland. You did it! Feels good, doesn't it? I am still running Windows 10 21H1, which (as I understand it) will only be supported until December of this year. But I put 21H2 in my registry and that is the one that will be supported till Oct 2025. Am still waiting for that update to show up in my options, but if it has not done so by the fall, I will upgrade to 21h2 manually.

I was hoping you would see my post. I also have the 21H1 version s the targeted version (I was on the older version).

It's my understanding that if you do have 21H2 on your computer, that is the version with Windows 11 hiding in it. Be very careful not to have this happen all over again. The Microsoft advisor who guided me with the registry edit told me specifically to put in 21H1 as the target version and NOT 21H2 as the risk of Windows 11 was possible again.

The confusion is that Windows 11 is the same version number: 21H2. I guess the only thing that might stop Windows 11 is that when you do edit the registry, you type in WINDOWS 10. Then maybe you will be safe with 21H2. "Microsoft still refers Windows 11 as 21H2 update officially"

I wouldn't mind if I could trust that when I check for updates, I'll have the option to 'stay on windows 10' and never see Windows 11 come up. I don't trust it as the reason I went through all of this was because Windows 11 downloaded itself with me doing nothing.
