How to Cancel Windows 11 update?

I'm one of the people who had Windows 11 download itself without me telling it to do so. Now, it is ready for install. I do not want to install Windows 11 at this point. I want to keep my Windows 10.

I've paused it for 7 days, but this is a temporary solution. Can I delete the Windows 11 download somehow? I'm running Windows 10 on a brand new Dell computer.

    No, I am keeping Windows 10 at least until mid-October 2025, when Microsoft says it will stop supporting it. My understanding is that Windows 11 eliminates tablet mode, which is the key feature in 10 that I don't want to lose. Last line in my last response to you should have said, "It can't be that bad," not "I can't be that bad."

    My point was just that the limbo you are in, continually blocking updates, is not good either. If you don't want to chance the registry edit, just going to Windows 11 may be a better choice than staying in limbo.

    Well, if you are not comfortable doing the registry edit and are not attached to using tablet mode (the thing about Windows 10 that I am most upset about eventually losing, as it is what I love most about my Surface Pro) it sounds like you might as well go ahead and allow Windows 11 to install so that you can get security updates. It can't be that bad, right?

    That is most likely what happened then. I still have not done any of those changes and now Windows 11 is fully downloaded (I could never stop it) and it showing it starts to install when I click "check for updates" so I can pause again.

    I fear doing that interruption of the installation progress will have a negative and unstable effect when Windows 11 installs on me. :(

    Hi, Portland. While it's true that eventually Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10, we have until mid-October, 2025 before they end security updates. This article is representative of many I found:

    Windows 10 gets expiry date: How long before Windows 11 is a necessity? (bgr.in)

    The version that will be supported until 2025 is the 21H2 version, though, so making sure you update

    Windows 10 to that seems important.

    So 3 1/2 more years before it's necessary to take Windows 11 if you don't want it. By then, who knows if you or I will even have the same computer?

    As you may remember from our earlier exchanges, I was able to successfully block any attempt to download Windows 11 using the instructions in this thread. I am thrilled to report that all continues to be well. My computer checks for updates regularly and has installed various ones for Windows 10 without ever again threatening me with Windows 11. I don't know what happened to Suzannebonjourshow above, but I suspect it was the "clean install" that gave her Windows 11, not the registry edit outlined in this thread.
