Can't switch out of S mode: "Try that again"
I recently purchased a laptop that came with the S mode of Windows. On the first startup it automatically installed Windows 11 (so downgrading to 10 is not an option). After set up etc. I updated Microsoft Store and installed various Windows updates and tried to switch it out of S mode. Instead, for the past few hours and with each of the hundreds of attempts, I keep getting a window that says "Try that again. Something happened on our end. Waiting a bit might help" along with an error code that changes every time. I am burned out and all out of ideas, any assistance on the matter will be greatly appreciated.

What does seem to work for other users is to perform a reinstall using Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using windows update > Reinstall now.

2024-06-05T15:40:37+00:00 I just got an HP off of Amazon and was having the same issue. I called HP support (888-698-3762) and it turns out that my original settings were for a 4G ram and 128-bit operating system. They upgraded it to a 16G and 512-bit system with Windows 365 (free for a year). In doing so, they never upgraded the Intel Processor. It should be running on at least 2.4Hz, but it is only at 1.10Hz. Which is incompatible with the rest of the settings.
I HP IT guy and I tried for 2 hours to find a work around solution (even thought that would void my warranty with HP) with no luck. He can't even find my laptop's HP ID in their system either. Even though it is the correct HP ID number.
If you bought this off of eBay or Amazon. Check your computer's system information in Settings, then in the About section, and device specifications will show you everything that you need to know.
Now, I am about to write to the Amazon seller asking for an HP device **w/out any modifications (**that were made by them) or ask him to ship me one directly from HP. Meaning, they have to honor the specifications and price that I ordered this laptop with or eat the cost of shipping me one from the HP store.
However, if you need want to follow the following steps, this is what we did.
- Shut down the computer
- After turning the power back on hit the "esc" key a few times (over and over again) until the black screen pops up.
- Hit F10
- Toggle (or click on) to the 4th tab that says "Boot Option"
- Click on the secret (or search boot tab below - I can't read my writing anymore) boot option and hit enter.
- Click on the "disable" button and hit enter.
- Next hit the F10 button and about 2 or 3 rows down you will see a unique 4-digit code (ex. 7631) + enter command.
- Type in that code onto your keyboard and hit enter.
It should reset your preinstalled modified software and go back into the Microsoft store and search for "switch out of S mode." If it still gives you an error after clicking on the turn off S mode (try again error), do what I am doing and contact the person that sold it to you!
