"This sign-in option is disabled because of failed sign-in attempts or repeated shutdowns". I've been locked out of my laptop since last night and can't log back in. How do I fix this issue?

So randomly last night (about 12 hours ago) my laptop with Windows 11 shows the above error message when I input my pin.

"This sign-in option is disabled because of failed sign-in attempts or repeated shutdowns. Use a different sign-in option, or keep your device powered on for at least 2 hours and then try again".

Prior to this, I used my laptop normally and everything was fine. I did not put in the pin several times and certainly not repeatedly shut down my laptop, so I'm not sure where this even comes from.

From what I understand, my only chances to log back in my laptop are to:

  1. Wait 2 hours WHILE the laptop is powered on.
  2. Use a different sign-in option (use password - and I have no idea what this password is lol).

I can't do solution 1 because my laptop powers down after like 30 seconds, so I cannot keep it powered on for 2 hours unless I press a button on my laptop every 29 seconds for 2 hours.

For solution 2, the different sign in method asks me to put in a password, not sure which password this is. It can't be the password that I use to log in to my Microsoft account online because it says that's incorrect.

Now, following from solution 2, I get the option to reset this password, by answering 3 memorable questions, but here too at least 1 of memorable questions is incorrect.

Can I get back into my laptop without having to factory reset everything?

Does anyone know if the 2 hours wait need to be consecutive?

Thanks all :)

EDIT: It has been 11 months and people still seem to have the same issue as me. Microsoft, please fix this bug / glitch. It's obviously causing a lot of headaches. I was able to simply factory reset my laptop as everything I had was backed up elsewhere, but I'm sure 90% of the people here cannot do this because the laptop still has vital stuff not backed up else where. Even if they could backup, it's a really long and painful process to set the laptop back up.

This really needs to be addressed asap please :)

yes its the same fn one you use onlone,

microsoft , ,facebook,, gmail,, all work the same,, if forget and cant reset password you sol and need to start over with a new account. 1st try to reset the password and change pin etc,

and your correct, its the exact same ******** password that you use online,, microsoft account is a live , formaly hotmail account they all the same god dam thing,

,, if you cant long in , its stated here 1000 times,, try on another computer to log into your microsoft/hotmail/live email account,

if can log in online on other computer ,, problem is your laptop you cant sign in on ,, ie , keyboard problem or windows corruption/malware or what ever,,

next is to use data recovery methods if needed,, need a tech for that, then reset your pc to factory after trying a external keyboard etc,,

nothing is wrong its doing what its designed to do, protect someone from getting your files, its your computer, in fact you can log into your microsoft account on any computer from anywhere in the world,, the only problem is the uneducated Humans here. and millions blaming Microsoft,, fn hilarious really. 9 out of 10 they say, Before you reply ,, Remember , the only difference between us and them,, is we have never asked anyone for help,, i have never, i always fixed my own computer problems since i was educated in computers,. you people blaming Microsoft probly also the kind that does not change their oil often enough then blame the car manufacture when the engine fails,,,, we call that an ID 10 T error in my school. Do you know how many people I have asked for help in compters since 1990,,, ZERO,, yet all the compters around me work perfectly,, so what does that tell you,, the problem is not MICROSOFT, the problem is you and your education peoples.. lol true story,, take that to the bank,, sick of this forum,, so many retards here,, sorry for any spelling, i type 50 wpm and its early before my coffee, and yes , my school was in Picton Ontario, and we also had a typing class in grade 9 , and 10 there so we learned how to type, our teacher used to cover out hands with a sheet so we could not look at the kbd , we had to use our brain and remember where the keys were. . In Fact did you know computers used to be called dumb terminals, as they are only as smart as the user,, they are only rely on input, they are input devices.

lol, you cant use or set up windows 11 without a msa, unless you used rufus and on unsupported hardware to bypass, , nothing to do with this issue, of course if you have and msa you can log in from any pc in the world on line,, you need to fix the user account on this pc for this issue,, for eg, if you have another local account already on this same pc , you can log into that other account and then create another from there, its a local issue
