Agreed that apps should not be coded where the UI is blocked, however, the OS is supposed to isolate that to the application not system wide. This particular issue (for me anyway) seems to be across applications, which would indicate that the problem is closer to driver, OS or hardware level than application level. These types cross application isolation and would affect the entire system.

That said when I took my mouse apart I found a substanial amount of debris in and around the left button switch. I used some compressed air and alcohol to clean it. It has been fine for a couple of weeks now.

Abstract: Mouse Balls Available as FRU (Field Replacement Unit)

Mouse balls are now available as FRU's. Therefore, if a mouse fails to operate or should it perform erratically, it may need a ball replacement. Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls should only be attempted by properly trained personnel.

Before proceeding, determine the type of mouse balls by examining the underside of the mouse. Domestic balls will be larger and harder than foreign balls. Ball removal procedures differ depending upon the manufacture of the mouse. Foreign ball can be replaced using the pop-off method. Domestic balls are replaced using the twist-off method. Mouse balls are not usually static sensitive. However, excessive handling can result in sudden discharge. Upon completion of ball replacement, the mouse may be used immediately.

It is recommended that each replacer have a pair of spare balls for maintaining optimum customer satisfaction, and that any customer missing his balls should suspect local personnel of removing these necessary items.

Thank you for your suggestion. The bluetooth Microsoft Mouse 4000 that I am using works fine on my other machine. It's not a mouse issue, I assure you. The entire systems is hanging whenever it writes files to a drive. I have tried the mouse dongle in different ports, no change. I have updated all of the drivers for my mouse, video card, etc. Also, I doubt that it's an application issue, since it happens across all applications, including Windows Explorer.

Surely, someone knows how to tell this machine to not allocate all of its resources to creating, copying, or moving files!

No matter how long this goes on Microsoft keeps putting the onus on the users for what is their responsibility.

Last time they wanted users to go off network and report back their findings. They must have a quite large and professional testing site... I think they should stand up and work hard and yes spend money until they can solve this issue and report back to the users.

This issue has roughly been around for 5 years.

The only thing I can think of is they use Apples to avoid this issue.

I ran W10 and a MS Mouse... I now run W11 and a MS Mouse on a brand new top of the line desktop... and I still have this issue.

When will Microsoft do whatever it takes to fix this issue... as they should.

Hi, I am experiencing the exact same issue. I got a brand new mouse and thought it was faulty but I'm getting the same issue with my original mouse which was fine until recently.

I switched from dongle to bluetooth but it makes no difference. A reboot helps for a while but it starts again. the mouse freezes for a few seconds and then starts working again. I tried brand new batteries and nothing makes a difference. I closed office, outlook specifically and thought it solved the issue but it started up again.

Now I do have a lot of hardware connected, a Quest 2, 2-3 external disks at any time. System is on a SATA SSD and I have 2 HDD and an m.2 drive as well.

The only hardware changed in the last while aside from the new mouse is a new GPU, Nvidia 3060Ti.

This is Windows 11 and is kept up to date with both drivers and patches.

EDIT: After some monitoring, Explorer.exe spikes in CPU to about 15% usage every time the mouse freezes (i7-10700k).
