Media Creation Tool - error code 0X80072F8F - 0X20000

I have a Dell computer from 2011. I'm trying to upgrade from WIN7 to WIN10.

I got an error message when trying to run the MediaCreationTool21H2.exe. It says to reference the error code 0X80072F8F - 0X20000. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Some server that the MediaCreationTool21H2.exe tries to talk to apparently no longer speaks the old TLS 1.0 security protocol, but Windows 7 SP1 still has the newer TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 disabled by default, resulting in this error code right at the start. So I had to first run the “Easy fix 51044” MSI to make a few registry changes to enable the more recent TLS versions, and then Media Creation Tool - error code 0X80072F8F - 0X20000 no longer appeared.

The newer operating system booted from the installation ISO image won't have that TLS-version limitation, so using that should be another solution to the same problem.

This issue might be because of several reasons such as the security software you may have installed on the computer, any program or application running on the computer at the back ground or due to some errors in the hard drive of the computer.

Please try the methods below and check.

  1. Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloadand delete all filesin that folder.
  2. Press Windows + Xkey on the keyboard.
  3. Go to Command Prompt as admin
  4. Type this command "wuauclt.exe /updatenow"
  5. Press Enter

If the issue persists, Perform the Clean Boot.

    Every so often wisdom is produced by someone with experience , you sir have saved my SDR radio software by allowing update from Win 7 to Win10 whenn everything else failed and i thank you for your input and sharing this with us.

    J'ai reçu un message d'erreur lorsque j'ai essayé d'exécuter MediaCreationTool21H2.exe. Il dit de faire référence au code d'erreur 0X80072F8F - 0X20000. Toute suggestion serait appréciée.

    Certains serveurs auxquels MediaCreationTool21H2.exe essaie de parler ne parlent apparemment plus l'ancien protocole de sécurité TLS 1.0, mais Windows 7 SP1 a toujours les nouveaux TLS 1.1 et TLS 1.2 désactivés par défaut, ce qui entraîne ce code d'erreur dès le début. J'ai donc dû d'abord exécuter le MSI "Easy fix 51044" pour apporter quelques modifications au registre afin d'activer les versions TLS les plus récentes, puis Media Creation Tool - le code d'erreur 0X80072F8F - 0X20000 n'apparaissait plus.

    Le nouveau système d'exploitation démarré à partir de l'image ISO d'installation n'aura pas cette limitation de version TLS, donc l'utiliser devrait être une autre solution au même problème.
