Windows 11 keeps changing audio output.

Hello,

Windows 11 keeps swapping between audio output devices at random times. Even if I "don't allow" a device in the settings or disable it through 'more sound settings'. Sometimes it happens after a reboot, sometimes it just does it for no reason. Sometimes it goes well for a day, maybe two, and then it'll swap things around again.

Is there a way for me to 'lock' the output device? My default device is set as the default. Sometimes it changes volume to maximum after a swap which you can probably understand is very inconvenient.

Did I miss a setting somewhere?

I'm using my earbuds plugged in to one of my monitors and the monitor is connected through DP, so the audio controller is my graphics card (nvidia) rather than the on-board one.

Can anyone help me out?

    DEFAULT ALWAYS CHANGES !

    You just turn on a ps5 controller bam microphone changes even tho your xlr mic is set to default

    You take out your bluetooth headphones and they get set at default and thats the reason the default can change at all and is broken
    because everything that just connect with your system that either got a speaker or mic will set as default.

    Even if you disable it completely in the audio device menu it still changes

    It really shouldn't be hard to clamp down default audio devices chosen by the user. A few days ago, I switched off my receiver (default, connected via HDMI) and the TV suddenly went to 11 and played some youtube video in the background on full volume, even though I'm 100% sure, I've disabled it in device manager. That's a problem.

    No one hates advice, but your post very much came over like one of those posts from people who only come here to flex their so-called knowledge about a subject. Your post simply wasn't good nor useful. Calm down.

    OK I decided to read it through... something I now regret. My take on what you wrote can basically be boiled down to this:

    • You think you are awesome and experienced.
    • You never have problems you can't solve.
    • The problem is multifaceted and not just about Windows 11 (that one point I can agree with)
    • You don't have a solution other than sell your computer and buy a new one.
    • Avoid Chinese made components.

    Did I miss anything. Seriously dude, what exactly where you trying to achieve here? This seemed very self-serving, and you made a bunch of logical fallacies.

    It is always difficult in threads like this to figure out which people are having related problems, and which are different due to their hardware or settings. So being charitable you are not wrong in that it may not be Windows 11 problem for some or many of the people here, but we don't have enough information to make that call and given Windows track record for introducing odd bugs over the years, I would say that statistically speaking there is higher chance it is a Microsoft issue than not.

    I too have some anecdotal experience... in my experience this problem is new and not one I had on Windows 10 with the same hardware (all hand-built quality gear). And it was not present when I first upgraded to Windows 11. I suspect Windows 11 driver updates are a factor, but there of course could be a range of other things that are potential causes. Please note I am not assuming I know for sure, but I don't think it can be discounted at this point.

    Lol, okay, I chopped it up a little more . Let me know if I need to come by & cut your steak for you too! It's your choice, as your the one w/the tech problem. There's solid tech advice there for people that truly want to avoid this problem in the future, but you do you.
