Hi RAJU.MSC.MATHEMATICS thank you for your response

Powershell is not allowed in S mode either :-( I have found other forums saying the same thing

    I'll just ignore the update

    Cheers, RG

    Thanks Kirk-MSFT,

cmd.exe will not start on my Surface Go in S mode! Do you have an alternative?

    Thanks for your input.

    Cheers, RG

I tried this and I still can't download the update. I can't even open the windows security menu in my settings.

Did you try creating a separate administrator account called "admin" (or anything different than "administrator") and trying to apply the update?

Yes. I created a local admin account named “Gravel” , logged in using that, changed ownership of the quoted folder as described, changed the permissions as described, exited the file explorer screens, tried the update - still fails.
