Printing from Win32 application - new after installing 22h2 update

After installing 22h2 update we get this new and "annoying" dialog box in some programs. Annoying since this dialog box always picks up the default printer (we have many), so that you lose the entries made earlier. This dialog box only appears on certain programs, e.g. indesign. Does not come up in Office programs, Photoshop etc. Before 22H2 we did not get this dialog box. We see this is the dialog box that comes up when you press "shift+ctrl+p" In, for example, Indesign, we press "ctrl+p", then "setup", then this new dialog box appears.  When we pressed "setup" before 22H2, one went straight to the Printer driver's setup without going through this  "Printing from Win32 application" dialog box.

How can we avoid this dialog box?

Thanks.

Hi Sumit,

Sorry to be hijacking the thread here. Thank you for pointing that out, as I had totally missed it. As stated by Espen Johansen, this has to be done every time we want to print. We usually do color proofs first, then the actual print run, on all the machines. It appears that this dialog shows up for every printer from InDesign now, if I choose Setup, just as Espen Johansen mentioned. I, too, would like the option to get rid of this dialog box as the default behavior, so I can more easily choose the options relevant to the particular printer.

I apologize to both of you for inserting myself in this discussion. I hope that I didn't prevent or hinder your progress in any way.

Thank you.

Hi,

I'm Ramesh here. Since you replied to my post, I assume your last message was directed to me. Anyway, you may want to check out a registry method I found that brings back the legacy print dialog in Windows 11 22H2. It works only for classic/win32 apps.

I hope you and Espen Johansen will find it helpful.

I have Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.2728) but I can't see all the steps in the registry. I cannot see a '\Print' option in the Microsoft folder.

    Help!

    You really have 22H2?

Current version number of 22H2 should be 22621.1485 (Settings > System > About > Windows specification). Only in this version the Print dialog has been changed to UWP style. In previous versions of Windows 11 the dialog should be standard and, as a result, Registry modification described above does nothing (and this key doesn't exist by default).

    Hi Ramesh

Yes I have send a feedback to MS by Feedback Hub. But it look like this new printing dialog is not the best programing Microsoft have done

    Peter Sunesen

Peter, can you share the link to your Feedback Hub submission? I assume there is a way to "like" or "+1" someone else's suggestion there, and I'd like to add my vote.

In my case, a year after this discussion started, the problem is not fixed. I have OS Build 22621.2283, and printing from InDesign had that same annoying dialog. I'm able to print, but I have to click through the extra layer, and when I do, the print driver settings revert to their defaults instead of what InDesign knows I used last time I printed. The registry hack Ramesh shared (I did the command line method) works for now. But I don't know if some new update will override it, and as others have said, this shouldn't even be necessary.

There have been so many things changed in Win11 (and even more in 22H2) that I don't want. I'm running more and more add-ons to get things to work as they used to, and at least one has no solution at all (I want thicker window borders, and Aero Lite theme on Win10 had them, but that doesn't work in 11). Perhaps I should have stuck with my old pattern of alternating Windows versions, because the good ones seem to alternate: 98 yes, ME no, XP yes, Vista no, 7 yes, 8 no, 10 yes.
