Since last Windows 10 automatic update done on 8 PCs (KB5016616, KB5012170 & KB890830) 4 PCs are now showing "task host window is stopping background tasks" on shutdown.

Does anyone know what caused this?

Thanks

The update which appears to have fixed it for me is the Quality Update 2022-10 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based systems (KB5018482) Have had several clear reboots since installing it so am really hoping that’s it now.

I found this other similar thread which seems to at least help identify which program or app is preventing shutdown: https://www.windowsdigitals.com/closing-1-app-and-shutting-down/

However, so far I haven't been able to confirm: I found two WINSRV entries in the Windows log/application:

    camtray.exe

    brstmonw.exe

Am hoping that will be permanent, my PC shut down OK after that update, the crunch will come when I use the PC again later this week. That has happened before, fine after an update then back to square one. Fingers crossed this time. Microsoft really need to fix this!

I too have this problem and not being too technically minded have hesitated to run some of the fixes in case they mess up my Windows 10 PC (22H2)

Like others have reported when shutting down I get the pop up Closing 1 App and Shutting Down, Task Host Window, Task Host is Stopping Background Tasks.

If I leave this after about 30 more seconds the PC reboots and the log in screen for Windows appears. When I try and shut it down the same this happens so this appears to be a re-boot loop of some sort.

If I shut down anyway there doesn't seem to be any issue as a result of doing this, except the re-boot loop is back again next time I start the PC.

Searching for a Fix I have discovered this, but before trying it wonder if it is safe to do so
