Icons Keep Disappearing From Taskbar - Windows 11

I upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11 a few months ago, and ever since I've been having a problem where the icons disappear from the taskbar. It happens while I'm using the laptop as well as when it comes out of hibernation.

I know this can be fixed temporarily by restarting Windows Explorer in the task manager, but this is happening several times a day and it's getting annoying. Is there a permenant fix yet?

I'm using Windows 11 Home version 21H2 build 22000.856 on a HP laptop with an Intel i5 1035G1 processor and 8GB of RAM. The problem didn't exist when I was running Windows 10.

Thanks.

    I found the solution:

Just remove a Regedit entry, and you´re done...

Find your user's ID on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\hivelist.

It should be the entry that includes the user's name on the value information. Example: \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Users\{USERNAME HERE}\NTUSER.DAT.

Take note of the long string at the end of the name of the entry. Example: \REGISTRY\USER\{LONG STRING}.

Now go to go to HKEY_USERS\{LONG STRING}\software\classes\.png\shellex and delete E357FCCD-A995-4576-B01F-234630154E96.

Then restart, and all icons will be normal again.

Same issue here... I have had this issue since I got this laptop that came with Win11.

Can't figure out what exactly causes it... It just appear to happen randomly...

Right click on the icon doesn't help. But if I left click twice, to maximize and minimize the window, it appears again.

I usually have to do it several times, since I have several programs open and don't know witch is witch (also because windows keep rearranging the icons...).

Disappearing task bar icons for me was fixed for me by installing the "Intel Driver and Support Assistant" and then updating Intel Drivers on my laptop.

⬇️⚠️ Here is a workaround, until Microsoft finally decides to fix the issue! ⚠️⬇️

The workaround is to install ExplorerPatcher.

This seems to fix the issue where icons disappear when switching virtual desktops in a multi-monitor environment.

    Steps:

    1. Download ExplorerPatcher and install it. This will restart Windows Explorer and change your taskbar to the Windows 10 one.
    2. Once installed, open the start menu and launch Properties (ExplorerPatcher).
    3. On the first settings tab Taskbar, change Taskbar style back to Windows 11 (or keep Windows 10 if you want ^^).

Voilà! After restarting the File Explorer, the icons should stop disappearing when switching virtual desktops!

If this works for you, please share it as largely as possible! The issue has been driving us insane for long enough.

Also consider donating to the ExplorerPatcher project which is Open Source (disclaimer: I'm not affiliated to the project in any way)!
