Please bring back the ability to freely arrange icons within folders "DISABLE AUTO ARRANGE"!

I don't know who Microsoft talked to to determine most people don't use icons in folders - I know they didn't ask me! Why would they take away such an option! I also find it EXTREMELY frustrating and wastes precious time every day. Just give users the option and let them decide how they want their folders to look!

Meantime, from File Explorer View tab you can set your files to Sort by your preference like Alphabetical order so they are easier to find.

You seem to be missing the point, Greg. Think of a folder like a toy box. Now, I DON'T want any of my toys in the box arranged AT ALL. In XP I can put two marbles over in this corner and they STAY where I put them. I want to put 3 flashlights and a toy wheel in the middle. I want to put my teddy bear in this area today and another area tomorrow. Now,again, I DON'T WANT ANY ARRANGEMENTS OF ANY OF MY TOYS. This was automatic and the default in XP. Windows 10 took away the ability to choose "NONE" for autoarrange so EVERY folder MUST be arranged even if you don't want it to be arranged...your only choice is date, name, size, etc, but IT MUST BE ARRANGED (because Microsoft has gone fascist and the trains MUST run on time!) Microsoft, put the "NONE" choice BACK into the autoarrange options and half of your customers will stop thinking of you as autoarrange fascists.

Hi Thanks for staying on Greg! Alphabetical or date or size etc. do not work for me. Another example is if you left your winter coat in your closet and it is gone when you get back. It's been put in some other closet or on another hanger somewhere. Do you know the name of the coat? Do you know the date you put it there? Maybe a terrible analogy but on my older Mac computer I know exactly where every file is because they are still where I put them. My preference in sorting is NONE. I do understand others may like the computer to change their files. I want them untouched when I leave my computer. Windows HAD it (NO auto arrange or align to grid). It's gone now, so we know they can and could restore it back.

    Your link to reinstall and re-register apps; I read through but I'm not sure how that's relevant or why I would want to do that? That sure sounds like asking for trouble too. This problem is a system registry file OS issue not an app registration issue.  Am I missing something or did you just attach the wrong link?   

  It keeps going back to so many users like me just want NO machine sorting. We want to sort the files the way that make sense to us. "Adding" a software function can cause problems. But just Leaving files Alone, doing Nothing to them, seems so utterly simple. I truly am baffled at this whole thing.  Let's keep trying.  Something obvious has to come up. Mark

No, doesn't work anymore. I tried it and it truly did work initially, exactly what was needed, then the darn current Creator's Update nullified it. Really frustrated MS broke it, again. It is/was a registry change patch so if someone out there knows how to work with that maybe they can get it to function again. Need a newer version of sorts.

Please keep trying to look. I am so grateful to have an experienced set of eyes helping. I won't give up if you don't!

Sorry to interfere in the thread. I previously made a correction in the registry, where I could then sort manually, but after update 22H2 Windows 10 Home, the method no longer works.

The idea of being able to sort images/folders/icons manually is that you can put them in a certain order and then 'mass' name them so that they always keep this order. An example. I receive photos from 3 different photographers about the same event, the photos of course have different names, I then want to put them in chronological order and 'mass' name them so that the order is subsequently maintained. It is a huge job if you have to do this manually. So that's why manual sorting is very important, at least for me.
