Why does my snipping tool no longer bring up the pop up image to edit?

Without doubt the Snipping Tool in Windows 11 is buggy. I have "Automatically save screenshots" to OFF and for Windows Settings > Apps > Default Apps "Screen Snipping", the default 'file types or link types' is set to "Screen Snipping" (NOT "Snipping Tool"). With these settings, a right-click on "Snipping Tool" (either the taskbar shortcut or under "All apps") and "Take a new screenshot", always presents me with the editing window albeit the position is very annoyingly somewhat random - this is the only Windows application in my memory that breaks the rule that says 'remember the size and position of any given window for next time'.

As for Windows key-Shift-S, this always gives me a notification "Snip copied to clipboard" but has never automatically invoked the editing window requiring instead a click on the notification itself. To begin with I found this frustrating but I've come round to thinking that I actually like this behaviour. Combined with the Windows 'Clipboard History' feature, I can quickly take a few screenshots one after the other (to, say, illustrate a little workflow) and then paste them somewhere else later on.

I also have, by the way, "Multiple Windows" set to ON. When invoked with the right-click, this enables multiple editing windows, one for each screenshot, which is sometimes handy.

AHA!!! I found an answer that worked for me! I turned off the "automatically save screenshots" option in the Snipping Tool settings -- and voila! The notifications are back!

I'm not finding the same problem with less than or greater than 60%. From the smallest to very large boxes that I draw using Windows Key + Shift + S, the notification always appears in the bottom right-hand corner. Clicking anywhere on the notification then causes the editor window to make an appearance albeit in fairly random positions on the display - it never remembers its last position and size. Sometimes it's so high on the display the windows control buttons (Min,Max and Close) at the top-right can't be seen.

That is my single biggest gripe at the moment. The Snipping Tool is not obeying one of the fundamental conventions of Windows that the position and size of a window for a given application is remembered for next time.

My Windows version is a little behind yours so I'll test again when I get to 3447.

My plaudits to Jasell____ who seems to have stumbled on the solution to my problem. As described, I went to Settings ->Apps -> Default Apps -> Screen Snipping.

I had looked here previously and after scrolling a long way down to find "MS_SCREENCLIP", made sure that "Snipping Tool" was set as the default app which makes logical sense. But as Jasell____ suggested I switched the default app to "Screen Snipping" not really seeing the difference between these two options.

Then, on right-clicking the taskbar Snipping Tool shortcut and clicking "Take a new screenshot" and drawing the box, volià, the Snipping Tool editing/save window popped up! This is excellent news. This is the behavior I've been used to for some years in both Windows 10 and 11.

There is still the annoyance of Win Key + Shift + S not behaving the same way - it just causes the notification to pop-up which must then be clicked to open the editing window. But this has been the case in both Windows 10 and 11 for a long time but since I don't usually take a screenshot that way I haven't let it bother me too much.

And there's still the bug of the window not being positioned where I placed it previously - the Snipping Tool seems to have a mind of its own as to where to position itself on the display sometimes even very close to the top making it difficult to drag it down. This is surely a simple thing the MS could fix unless it's something peculiar about my graphics settings.

Still, I'm most grateful for Jasell____'s idea.

This fixed it for me!

Just make sure MS-SCREENCLIP is set to 'Screen Snipping'. Just look at the icon that is different from 'Snipping Tool'. It's more white with a blue scissor pointing to the right.

This screen is in Dutch but the icons should speak for themselves :)

When I made the change to 'Screen Snipping' it worked like a charm again. This has been bugging me for weeks already.

Hahahaaa try my fix it took me ages to figure out but it worked straight away, just uninstall and reinstall the last few updates 😊 If it's still not working for you that is.
