Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry Using High CPU

Hi, whenever I startup, I notice that Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry uses about 50-80% of my CPU which stops after a minute or so. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

The Windows Compatibility Telemetry contains technical information about how the device and its associated software work. It sends data to Microsoft on a regular basis in order to improve the system and improve the user experience. To resolve your issue about its high CPU usage, you can disable this service in the Task Scheduler by following the steps below:

  1. Click Start, type Task Scheduler, and then press Enter.
  2. On the TaskScheduler window, go to this path: Task Scheduler Library\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience.
  3. On the Application Experience folder, look for Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser.
  4. Right-click on it, select Disable, and then confirm to complete the process.

Hey I found a fix, I just went to that file location of that "Telemetry"

In my case it was at : C:\Windows\SysWOW64

  1. Renamed "CompatTelRunner.exe" -> "Something.exe"
  2. Then Ended the task on taskmanager then it didn't start up.

Of course I am not sure if it will have any long term effects. Do it at your risk :)

    These instructions did not work for me.

    Telemetry can be disabled in Group Policy Editor. You must have Administrator privileges and either Pro or Enterprise version of Windows. I am running Windows 10 Pro. This is what I did:

    Windows key + R. Type gpedit & click OK.

    In the left pane, navigate to:Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds

    **In the right pane, double click Allow Telemetry.On the left, select Disable

    Click OK

    If you are running Windows Home, then you can install an open source program called Policy Plus for access to Group Policy Editor. I have never used it. Install at your own risk. https://github.com/Fleex255/PolicyPlus

    There is a way to enable access to Group Policy Editor on Home versions of Windows but it's somewhat involved so I won't include it here. If this interests you, then search for 'enable Group Policy Editor' and you'll get a lot of results.

    I've checked process is NOT running and tried to rename or delete CompatTelRunner.exe located in the C:\Windows\System32 AND in C:\Windows\WinSxS, I receive a "FILE ACCESS DENIED" error-- "You need permission from TrustedInstaller to make changes to this file"

    I can't even delete files from my own system?
