This worked for me. I disconnected printer from laptop (USB), executed the download, program told me to connect printer, and it was done. Took about 15 seconds

    Check in your download folder, You should see the file there then install and connect your printer.

    Absolute safest is to go to HP's support site and download the LJ 1018 drivers for Windows 8 64-bit.

    I finally got it working. It took more than 15 seconds, and I'm pleased to have print-ability again!
    (First pass created a printer called simply "LaserJet 1018", second pass created one called "HP LaserJet 1018" and that one worked.)
