This worked for me. I disconnected printer from laptop (USB), executed the download, program told me to connect printer, and it was done. Took about 15 seconds

Thank you very much! This was the info I needed. So the problem was the language.
Strangely, the HP website is not of any help in this regard. Whatever you do there, you always come to the same page, and you'll never find a driver to download.

Try this https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=HP%20laserjet%201018%20 . Download that for Windows 8.1 and later drivers, and follow the manual installation procedure already described
