Windows 11: Thumbnail previews do not show on folders

Does anyone know if this is a known "bug"? Like many others it is extremely hard to conceive that this would be a feature intentionally removed.

Windows 11 was a major upgrade to the UI and it very easy to see some last-minute bugs were found, or not noticed at release. If it was known it is perfectly reasonable, they would not delay the release. That is what I would have done. I know, "in something as fundamental as folder icons.." But yes, I think it could be.

There is another issue that is mostly certainly a bug if you have noticed. You can't put the taskbar anywhere but on the bottom of the screen. It is most definitely a bug because you can go into the registry and change a value and you can move it anywhere.

However, when you move it, the bar does move but no icons on it. Same thing in as in other threas. A lot of cursing and moaning and vilifying MS.

I now, hard to believe they would miss that. Does not make MS look good. But I work in software and have seen innocuous things like this happen.

I just wish MS would publish errata with a release. But they may and I have nowhere to find it so that is why I'm asking. But they certainly quash a lot of user's frustration by publishing explanations.

They do say, if you provide you contact when you submit the will get back to you with information.

By the way as another example that everyone should be aware of. I think it is a complete oversight. If you use OneDrive you can lose files permanently if you use files on demand feature. I lost some important work. They broke the fundamental model of the recycle bin by doing you the favor of deleting files over 30 days old.

You can't turn it off.

Unless I am reading the work around you suggest incorrectly, I think you have really missed the issue in this thread. What you are showing has been there from about day 1 of windows. You can manually asign any arbitrary image as an icon to about anything. Shortcut, File, Folder ...

That is not what this is about. This is about windows automatically picking that icon in a very useful way. In previous windows if you viewed multiple folders in a directory in "Thumbnails View" Windows automatically picked content from within the folder and used it as the icon. For photos this is really, really useful. It is a little bit more sophisticated, but it essentially picks the thumbnail of the first item in the folder to be the folder icon.

For photos the folder icon becomes the first image in the directory. It is really, really useful. If I have 10 directories of photos from different times of the year, I can almost instantly see the directory I want because I recognize that photo.

Does that clear it up for you.?

You misunderstood my reply - The person I was replying to had a low disk space issue which does cause thumbnails not to generate. The issue you are talking about is a ticket I actually opened up, which is Windows 11 no longer supporting thumbnail previews on folders. This is a huge deal for me because I'm a photographer/graphic designer and now I have 100's of folders that I literally have no idea whats inside them. For me, them removing that simple feature is actually pretty crippling and I had to roll back to windows 10.
