Just installed W11, clean install. I installed Irfanview for my image viewer and simple editing. However it will not associate jpg and png file types, although it did for many other file types. I tried installing as an Administrator. I tried setting associations from within Irfanview. I tried going to the Default Programs control panel and tried to associate jpg files with Irfanview. JPG is not listed in the file types. Nore is png. Both have been taken by Photo Viewer and nothing seems to make it give it up.
I understand that VLC video viewer is also having trouble with setting file associations.
I am using the 64 bit version of Irfanview, latest version. I am using Windows 11 Home.

I think I fixed it. I went to "Apps and Features", found Microsoft Photos, clicked on the hamburger menu on the far right, chose "advanced options" went to the Reset section and performed both the Repair and the Reset functions. After that I was then able to associate jpg and other file types to Irfanview.
Glad I could help, you are right about Linux, I used it for some years and it is a lot easier than many people think,
Its only disadvantage is the smaller selection of computer games and cetain other popular programs.

Unfortunately, it seems Microsoft finally caught wind of this workaround, and have removed .jpg from the Photos app settings as well.
It was fun while it lasted, but every time they make things like this more of a hassle, the endless tweaking of Linux starts looking like less and less of a problem. I think the scales have actually already tipped to the point that MS takes more work to do less already, so the only real reason to stick around is masochistic familiarity. "The devil you know." Great principle to rest your core business model on.
Just tried the solution and it worked like a charm. Microsoft Photos App takes forever to open and is miles away from being practical like Irfanview is.
