Just installed W11, clean install. I installed Irfanview for my image viewer and simple editing. However it will not associate jpg and png file types, although it did for many other file types. I tried installing as an Administrator. I tried setting associations from within Irfanview. I tried going to the Default Programs control panel and tried to associate jpg files with Irfanview. JPG is not listed in the file types. Nore is png. Both have been taken by Photo Viewer and nothing seems to make it give it up.
I understand that VLC video viewer is also having trouble with setting file associations.
I am using the 64 bit version of Irfanview, latest version. I am using Windows 11 Home.

I think I fixed it. I went to "Apps and Features", found Microsoft Photos, clicked on the hamburger menu on the far right, chose "advanced options" went to the Reset section and performed both the Repair and the Reset functions. After that I was then able to associate jpg and other file types to Irfanview.
This! Thanks you very much. I just spent an hour following other suggestions. Also, now the other file extensions (.BMP, .JPEG for example) are in the Apps > Defaults search box.
This also allows me to change the association with video files (.MOV, .AVI, etc) to VLC.
So 10 minutes later, I've got most of the image extensions set to Irfanview, most of the video extensions to VLC, and have left the audio files as they are now; will need to revisit this when I install either Winamp or MediaMonkey.
JFC, how much longer are we going to have to live with such a crappy file system, were we have to rely on the mutable file extension (which MS has been trying to hide from ~Win98??) as the link to the default application. Maybe they can use OS/2's HPFS? Or whevs Apple's using. Unless that's the old "magic" file, in which case, no.
