Cannot install Windows 11 - Error 0xc1900101

What frustrates me is that I have been getting notifications since May that my 1909 version of Windows 10 has expired and is no longer supported. As if I got any support from Microsoft on Windows before that point in time. They only have a telephone for business clients, not those of us who use their "technology" for home/personal.

I have tried a few suggested fixes, run the Troubleshooter many times (BTW, it continues to say, Last Time Checked: Never).

I use the Windows Update tool and actually get through the entire download. Then I check my version in About and it still says 1909.

But each time I review the Download History under Settings, it shows a new and different error code. Never the same one twice.

Super ridiculous.

Meanwhile Microsoft continues to ask if I'd like to buy some more software.

The recent Insider Builds were failing to even start to install because they were complaining I didn't have a TPM 2.0 chip. Turns out I did (it was disabled) but even after re-enabling it in my NUC's BIOS, I'm back to the original GSOD/0xc1900101 I was getting with the first Win11 Preview.

This particular thread is intended for folks in the development channel trying to upgrade to Win 11 (preview), so you may have some difficulty in interpreting some of the postings, as they are intended for us nerds with lots of technical skills and experience. Microsoft support for their operating systems consists of providing monthly updates that include driver updates (the software that allows the operating system to control hardware), patches to fix security vulnerabilities, patches to fix stuff that doesn't work, and new features. When their official support runs out, you will no longer get those updates. They do provide more personal support for some problems sometimes. Posting on the correct forum will often get you an answer to a question you have, as well. For your problem, it is not related to this thread, which I started to discuss an issue with installing the 'preview' (beta) version of Win 11 to an existing PC which has been in service for some time, The solution I came up with (which will be unsatisfactory for many people) was to wipe the machine (delete the operating system and all data and applications), and install a fresh version of Win 10, and then change it to the development channel. This allowed me to install Win 11 (as an upgrade) without a problem. For your problem, you may wish to use a search engine on the Internet (such as Bing or Google), and describe your problem in a few words, and see what the search engine comes up with for a possible solution. Most commonly, Microsoft will recommend that you verify your existing installation by using DISM, SFC, and chkdsk utilities with a command window with administrator privileges. Look up those acronyms using a search engine to see how they are used. Then they would typically recommend that you try the Troubleshooter for Updates (sounds like you have already tried that). Getting multiple error codes may indicate that there are several problems with the PC operating system, and you should not attempt to update a PC with an operating system that has issues, until they are fixed. After you successfully update Windows to the latest version (21H1, introduced in the Spring of this year), you should be all set. As you know who Yogi and BooBoo are, I give you a gold star for that knowledge (most young folks would have no idea who they are).

I'm at the point where I resolved the TPM 2.0 issue stopping my Windows 11 install attempts, but am now faced with my 7th gen CPU (I7-7700K) being unsupported in Win11.

It's hard to believe that MS will expect all Windows PC users to upgrade to 8th+ gen CPUs to run Win11. That has to be a substantial part (possibly a majority) of the Windows 10 installed base.

I'm expecting that they will come up with a way to allow 7th- gen CPUs to work with Win11 but perhaps without some of the new features (e.g. support for Android apps).

I'd be interested to hear what others know about this issue.
