importing photos from iphone not showing in folders by date taken

I have always used autoplay or photo app to import photos from my iphone to my Windows 10 computer.  As of this week (maybe since the last Windows update) the photos do not import in the standard folders by date taken as they always have.  They are just randomly going to my pictures folder, not within folders by date as they always have. Photos I imported on December 10 did as they always do.  When I imported photos today from the last several days they just went to the pictures folder. I have rebooted my computer, rebooted my iPhone X and tried importing just one new photo.  It is still not working as it always has.  Any assistance would be welcome.    Thanks.

I just go straight to the iPhone link that shows up on File Explorer when I plug in the phone. It should show up on the "This PC" list. I don't bother with the Win10 Photo app.

When you see the link for the phone, right-click and the "Import Photos and Videos" link shows up on the menu. If your iPhone comes up on AutoPlay, the File Explorer option should be available there as well.

When the import window pops up, click on "More Options" and there you will find the folder creating options. They can be grouped by name, date imported, date taken, and other combinations. This is also where you can change the AutoPlay options.

I've also used the photo transfer utilities from Canon and Nikon to transfer images from my DSLR. The applications are free for anyone to download and use, and they will read the iPhone directories and also create individually dated folders. But, I don't remember if they have issues with reading all the subdirectories within the iPhone's DCIM directory.

On our Mac, I don't bother with Apple's Photos app. I do all of the transfers using Nikon NX-Studio application. Rather than importing as individual photo files, Apple's Photos app not only dumps everything into a single directory, but all the photos populate a single monolithic file. If you want individual photo files, you have to export them out of the Photos app. It seems that Microsoft has mimicked that approach with the Windows Photos app.

I have the same problem , but the reply did not address the original question. The question is about the way Photos imports the pictures into the computer , NOT that its not able to. The Moderator didn't fully read or comprehend the question, How to import photos so that they are organized by dated folders ? This used to be done automatically. Please fix or advise.

This seemed to be the only reasonable solution. Thanks!

As there's been no indication from Microsoft that they are going to reinstate this function I've stopped using windows photos for my photo import and found an app that I run on my phone (android) which sorts photos into 'date taken' folders in seconds. I then plug my phone into my PC and simply move the folders over via cut & paste in file explorer. this is a MUCH faster , cleaner, reliable process than windows photos ever was!   (Hasn't even crashed mid way yet...I know.. amazing)

I'm not an apple person so not sure if/how you can do this on an iphone but you might be able to run a similar app in windows on your photo 'dump folder' after import to organise it.

Search for photos to directories in app store. There's probably a few there you can try out.

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We understand the difficulties as you are unable to transfer pictures from your iPhone to the PC using Photos app. In order to get clarity and to assist you accordingly, please reply with the answers to the questions below:

    • What is the Windows 10 Version and Build installed? (Type winver in Windows search/Run command)
    • Are you using Photos app or Windows Photo gallery?
    • What is the version of Photos app installed on the PC?
    • Are you aware of any changes on the PC prior to this issue?

    Step 1:

If you are referring to the Photos app, then try these steps

    1.     Connect the iPhone to your Windows 10 PC.

    2.     In your iOS device, go to Settings

    3.     Open Photos and Under ‘Transfer to Mac or PC’.

    4.     Check if you have the option to change from Automatic to Keep Originals.

    Step 2:

Also reset Photos app on the PC and check

    1.     Press Windows + I key to open Windows Settings.

    2.     Click on Apps and select Apps & feature from the left pane.

    3.     Scroll and look for the Photos app.

    4.     Select the app and click on Advanced option.

    5.     Click on Reset and once you see a tick mark, then relaunch and check.

The Photos app in Windows 10 gathers photos from your PC, phone, and other devices, and puts them in one place where you can more easily find what you’re looking for.
