importing photos from iphone not showing in folders by date taken

I have always used autoplay or photo app to import photos from my iphone to my Windows 10 computer.  As of this week (maybe since the last Windows update) the photos do not import in the standard folders by date taken as they always have.  They are just randomly going to my pictures folder, not within folders by date as they always have. Photos I imported on December 10 did as they always do.  When I imported photos today from the last several days they just went to the pictures folder. I have rebooted my computer, rebooted my iPhone X and tried importing just one new photo.  It is still not working as it always has.  Any assistance would be welcome.    Thanks.

I just go straight to the iPhone link that shows up on File Explorer when I plug in the phone. It should show up on the "This PC" list. I don't bother with the Win10 Photo app.

When you see the link for the phone, right-click and the "Import Photos and Videos" link shows up on the menu. If your iPhone comes up on AutoPlay, the File Explorer option should be available there as well.

When the import window pops up, click on "More Options" and there you will find the folder creating options. They can be grouped by name, date imported, date taken, and other combinations. This is also where you can change the AutoPlay options.

I've also used the photo transfer utilities from Canon and Nikon to transfer images from my DSLR. The applications are free for anyone to download and use, and they will read the iPhone directories and also create individually dated folders. But, I don't remember if they have issues with reading all the subdirectories within the iPhone's DCIM directory.

On our Mac, I don't bother with Apple's Photos app. I do all of the transfers using Nikon NX-Studio application. Rather than importing as individual photo files, Apple's Photos app not only dumps everything into a single directory, but all the photos populate a single monolithic file. If you want individual photo files, you have to export them out of the Photos app. It seems that Microsoft has mimicked that approach with the Windows Photos app.

    It's true that this fix creates separate folders for each date.  If you take one pic every day for 30 days, you will end up with 30 folders.  MS has broken this feature and there seems to be no other fix.

    As a reminder, MS will never address any issues posted here, as they don't monitor it and they don't care.  If you want support, you have to submit a formal MS support ticket and hope they take action.

    I personally have given up on MS to address, and yes I did submit a ticket and never got any response.  I'm now looking at third party apps and I hope I find one that imports them correctly, meaning create a folder for each month like it used to.

    This is complete customer unfriendly that windows 10 update the default photo app to remove one of the most useful features of month based folders when importing photo while not addressing serious issues like picture caching not properly functioning or phantom photos due to over caching of pictures that has been deleted.  It's a complete mess!!  A much better option would be allow the user to choose if they want all their picture dumped straight into the "Pictures" folder or organized into time based folders.  The feature already existed, and MS decides to remove it completely?  Go figure!!

    Sorry to hear this didn't work. My wife downloads 2 picture folders daily 5 days a week. It took her a couple days to catch on with the method I explained. She actually likes it now because before the downloads were dumping the entire 2 picture downloads in the same daily folder. Since she is now dating her own folder, she can add A.M. or P.M.. Much easier for her to find photo's. Hopefully they will add a fix to further updates.

    My wife had the same issue. This is something Microsoft will have to address, however, there is a back door to the problem.

    1. Open pictures. At the top in the ribbon, click New Folder. A new folder will appear normally at the bottom of the pictures

        page. Name the folder the date you are downloading the pictures, or a occasion, etc. When your done with that just close 

        the picture page to help avoid confusion. 

    1. Plug in your SD card or camera as you normally would to add pictures to your computer. The Import Items box will come 

        up. Under select, click all items or select the photo's you wish to put in the folder you previously created in the pictures

        folder. You will notice above that it says import to C://Users/17242/Picturers. Using this would dump your photos in your

        main picture folder. Click Change Destination under this. "Probably in blue letters". Clicking that will bring up your main

        pictures folder. Click on the folder you created. Now click on "Add this folder to pictures" on the picture page at the

        bottom. Now you will notice the import to reads C://Users/17242/Pictures/"the name of your created album". Click the blue

        Import items on the bottom of the Import items page. Your photo's should now be in the folder you created on the main

        pictures page. To make the new folder and do all this literally takes less than a minute once you get used to it. Hope this
