xbox series x controller via bluetooth not recognized in games

I bought an xbox series x controller (not xbox one) from someone who had an elite and don't need the new controller. I'm sure it's authentic. I can connect it to my windows 10 pc via bluetooth and it appears as an xbox wireless controller.

However in all games it is not recognized as an xbox controller but a generic bluetooth "18 (don't remember the exact number) button controller with HAT" or something. And it doesn't work in any of my games.

Is this a known issue or did I do something wrong? It feels like either the controller is so new windows doesn't know it yet, or I'm missing a driver software, or games need to specifically support it. Anyone has similar experience? Thank you!

Edit: on 11/10/2020 MS updated its Xbox Accessories app which adds Xbox Series X/S controller bluetooth support. All you need to do is to connect the controller with a USB-C cable, open the app, go through a rather lengthy update, and now the controller connected via bluetooth is working perfectly.

    The pad is now working via bluetooth.

    1. Download the xbox accessories app from the ms windows store and use it to update the pad via usb.
    2. Update windows and download the patch released today.
    3. Reboot.

    Got the same issue that everyone is describing. 

    Made sure that Windows 10 is updated (currently in 20H2), the Xbox Accessories is updated (300.2011.9001.0) and the controller itself is updated (5.5.2614.0). No dice, controller is still detected as the generic controller people have described while in Bluetooth mode (the controller works perfectly in wired mode, however). The Xbox Accessories app also seems to be having some issues due to Xbox Live having issues right now, so if they have pushed an update, people may have to wait for Live to be back up again. 

    Unfortunate that this is the case, it's a pretty big oversight and I hope Microsoft has taken notice. It's a great controller otherwise.

    P.S. If anyone at Microsoft is somehow reading this, please add capture functionality with the share button! I'm surprised that's not available from the get go.

    The share button doesn't seem to work though, I was hoping this would work with Xbox Game Bar to take screenshots and clips. Anyone know if this is coming? 

     LOL... It would be a great feature, but I guess we are stuck with the gamebar for now.

    SOLVED IT: I bought an extra Series X controller for my PC and had this same issue myself where it would pair but not be recognized in game. My Series X console was not here yet but I still had my older Xbox One console. I paired the Series X controller with it, there was a firmware update for it, and once I updated the firmware on the controller and re-paired to my PC its working fine now. (Also after the firmware update the name of the controller in the Bluetooth pairing area of Windows 10 will change from originally being "Xbox Wireless Controller" to "Xbox Wireless Controller <random ID number>".

    tl;dr connect it to an xbox and update the firmware.

    Thats right the key is controller fw. Updating wasnt possible yday for me because i dont have an xbox and the xbox accessories app wasnt recognizing the controller. It took until today when ms updated the app that this can work.
