I had a problem installing the newest update KB5001831 ( I believe that is the correct number) on two computers running Windows 10. Finally Microsoft posted the same update but with number KB5001931 and it installed with no problems. All the information on their website about removing antivirus programs, and the other options does not fix anything. Why does Microsoft post updates that will not install?
My Windows 10 Version 20H2 will not install the update 0x80004005.
Have tried 3 times. Message on update page says it did not install and I may try again. This is not a new install. Have been using for couple of years.

2021-04-09T02:21:37+00:00 Short story: spent a couple of months trying to update looking for fixes. Found this thread, thought it was going to work a couple of weeks ago seem to get close, got to 99% and locked. System still under warranty, laptop with HP, tech-support ended up sending me a USB with an image with the base system. I backed up everything not that there was that much, bottom line is I have to reinstall everything software wise. It's a real pain in the posterior. It's been this way for 40 years hardware guys point at the software guys, software guys point at the hardware guys and we're all beta testers. Technology is great when it works, but it's getting pretty shaky at all levels.

2021-03-14T17:54:37+00:00 I am surprised to see that people are still having a problem with this, as am I with my laptop stuck in 1909. I always thought it was just me because I actually work with desktops that i have to update and all 30+ took the update well. Must just be a laptop thing? This needs to be addressed not ignored.
It's because they dont give a damn about the problem. Proof is has existed since May 2020, and its now March 2021 and the issues STILL EXISTS and most PC's wont update to 20H2. The issue is, as I read in another forum, the update is looking for something to do with the EDGE app that most of us have no use for and wont have on our PC, but without it, Miuscrosoft wont update because of the "Internal requirement" of the update. SO... in essence these bastards are continuously trying to FORCE us to use something we dont want. Been told the only way to get it to uodate is to get edge and update it fully, then run 20H2. Haven't tried it yet, but if anyone here tries it and it works, let us know.

2021-03-08T14:57:46+00:00 I finally succeeded after a couple of months of failed attempts! Here is how:
- Uninstalled virus protection (F-secure Safe, had done this previously too but does not help as a standalone measure)
- Disabled Windows Update from Services
- Enabled God Mode (search internet how to)
- In/from God Mode select/run "Free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files"
- From the above run "Clean up system files " too, so many times that everything is wiped clean.
- Enabled Windows Update from Services
- Downloaded and installed 20H2 update
And voila now the 20H2 update succeeded after tens of fails. What a grief has this been, I hope this helps even some of you other victims of MS.
