How to disable efficiency mode in task manager? Windows efficiency mode is making apps like Google Chrome unusable.

Task manager on my windows desktop  says that efficiency mode is active for several but not all sub-processes of google chrome and I believe that is the reason for the drop in performance.

I am able to disable efficiency mode for each individual sub-process, but *it returns a few minutes later. I cannot permanently disable it.*Simple actions such as changing a tab or moving the window causes it to freeze for several minutes. 

  • I have no recent or current updates to install. Everything is up to date.- There are no other demanding processes / apps running on my pc- I have tried altering Chrome's performance and memory settings. Nothing changed.- This problem is the same with Edge and some other applications.- Efficiency mode is greyed out for the entire application. Only certain sub-processes of chrome are in efficiency mode.

The only difference between yesterday and today, is that efficiency mode is active non-stop.

I do not want efficiency mode running at all for google chrome as it is the main browser I use for work and school.

    I have the same issue. I cannot turn off efficiency mode whatsoever for google chrome.

    I don't have any MacAfee products, Norton and MalwareBytes, and it happens to me, too.

    first time commenter

    i've had this affect my surface laptop and have been very frustrated

    i am now seeing better results

    1. disabled all system, power and performance 'features' in chrome
    2. same in edge (never used, but cannot uninstall) and it updated as well
    3. switched power mode (settings>system>power) in windows to 'best performance'

    not sure which one of 3 was key - suspect windows.....a few processes occasionally use efficiency mode still but is much much less...

    spoke too soon, though i notice is better and having less effect (and often more apparent after screen has been off, so at least some processes using efficiency mode or even appearing are related to that)

    Are you sure you don't work for Microsoft? Sounds like you are trying to push people to using Edge. ;)

    If you are a legitimate poster to this question... It is related to Windows EcoQOS system calls being made by Google Chrome.

    It will require changes in Chrome to allow users to toggle off calls to the EcoQOS system features in Windows. (Microsoft most certainly isn't going to change Windows for Chrome.)

    In the meanwhile, Chrome users can use Brave browser. Same Chromium engine and all add-ons will continue to work.
