Sending faxes using Windows 11.

One random guy (who only posted twice in 10 years) on page 1 claimed that it was disabled, which means diddly. HP, Canon and Epson continue to sell multi-function printers with fax capabilities in 2024. Microsoft only sells Windows 11 in 2024. Therefore you can fax within Windows 11 somehow.

We know that Microsoft fixed a security vulnerability in Windows 11 Fax services in March 2022.

Microsoft moved stuff around and documentation lagged. So the Microsoft staff (on page 1) gave the old way to get the windows Fax and Scan app. The current way was posted on page 3.

There is a thread here (I can't find it at the moment) that talks about not able to get the print to fax option in the new printer dialog, which was fixed by (I can't remember how) activating the old classic printer dialog. But that was a problem for large corporate environment.

Edit: Found the thread, if you don't get the print to fax option in your printer dialog, then you have to enable legacy printer dialog.

In my directory "App" there is no "Optional Features" page but I found it doing a keyword search in the Settings directory. I then did another keyword search "Fax" and discovered this feature does not exist in my MS 365 Personal version. So I feel pretty cheated. I'm running MS 365 Personal which updates automatically. There is no fax driver installed and, despite various claims around the web that all one need do is navigate to a checkbox, under Print and Document Services, this is not true. My system has no checkbox for a Windows Fax and Scan option on my system which is Windows 365 Personal. Worse, when I try to Google to find the driver for this feature, I receive the same erroneous instructions, like a broken record. Later, in this comment thread, one learns the Fax feature has been disabled.

The solution, obviously, is that (1) agents condition their replies knowledgeably to fit the system under discussion, not just regurgitate outdated information and (2) for MS to provide notice that this feature has been disabled. Clearly, currently, neither situation is in play.

In settings go to System (by default you might likely be there already)

Click on Optional Features/button on the right View features/type Windows Fax & Scan and it will appear

After installing the feature, I can confirm that step #1 is connect a phone line to your computer which I don't have :-(

Yes, you are correct that the option is not there.

In Windows 11 Pro 23H2 go to:

Settings ==> Bluetooth & devices ==> Printers & scanners ==> Fax ==> Open print queue

That will bring up the "Windows Fax and Scan" app.

But it will not send a fax until you install a driver for your Fax modem.

I have a U.S Robotics PCI internal modem.

I did a clean install of Windows 11 Pro. Device Manager shows:

But Windows 10 shows:

Widows 11 appears to have no modem drivers,

so, I went back to Windows 10 to find what I needed.

Drivers are found here: C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository

It took some searching, but I finally found the driver in folder:
5638x64.inf_amd64_47f4dbbd80ecadd0

I copied this folder into my windows 11 Downloads folder

Back to device Manager ==> Modem ==> Update Driver ==> Browse my computer for drivers

Browse to the Windows 10 folder that you put in Windows 11 Downloads ==> Next

You will see "Installing Driver" and then "Windows successfully updated your driver"

Now you can actually send a Fax.
