All USB devices Disconnect randomly on Windows 11.

All of my USB devices randomly disconnect and will sometimes reconnect on their own in 10-20 seconds. Other times when they do not reconnect I have to completely restart the PC to get devices back working. I have tried uninstalling drivers for the USB roothubs and devices with no luck of a fix. I have not seen this issue addressed elsewhere or corrected. Other instances have not been similar to mine and this issue was non existent before upgrading to Win11. I even did a repair install of Win11 with no luck either. Any help or fixes would be greatly appreciated.

I've the same issue, on a second PC already.

First PC that had the issue was off since January 2024 and I booted it in 16th of May 2024, I guess it updated in the background and after a few days I started having those random disconnects, I had at least 4-5 minimum per day until I left.

Second PC, is the one that I am on, I've used since January 2024 without an issue until I left on the 15th of May 2024 when I turned it off, when I came back, it worked ok up until yesterday. I had my first random disconnect on this one too and everything just disconnected for a second then reconnected. I couldn't move the mouse nor type on my keyboard for at least 5 seconds.

I've a portable SSD that I use, I will try to see if unplugging it will resolve this issue, then at least we know that its related to SSD/HDD driver issues.
I also uninstalled the last windows update from 4 days ago, just to be sure it's not that.
P.S.: I didn't copy anything on the portable SSD when the disconnects happened. I just had it connected.

I can confidently say that it's not a motherboard issue, it can't be a coincidence having both my motherboards needing an updated driver or both to be defective out of a sudden.

There are no new softwares that I have installed on either PC, other than updates to already existing apps/games.

I've watched my Event Viewer on both PC's when the disconnects happened. They both have the same "Metadata staging failed, result=0x80070490 for container {USB PID code here}" but at this moment I start believing that this is just the result of the disconnect and not the cause of it, but who knows. It's good to keep in mind.

Well, hopefully there will be a resolve to this, since it does affect productivity and leisure time. If I'll have any updates on local fixes, I will post about them.

LE. @Ben Answers : That is actually a very interesting information, I'll try to check the voltages on the USB ports to see if there is any surcharge that causes the random disconnects, but it's still weird that up until now it worked fine and the disconnects just appeared in the last month for me on the two PC's.

L.E2: I forgot to write the actions I took to see if the issue persists :

    • I've disabled all the "Let windows disable this device to save power" in Device Manager. [USB controllers and Human Interface Devices]
    • I've uninstalled the last windows update "KB5039212" but there's also a security update "KB5037771" that installed in the background today [17.06.2024]
    • I've disconnected the external USB SSD drive. [I have a strong feeling that this might be the issue but I'll wait to see if the disconnect happens again]
    • I've checked USB voltages and they all seem fine, but also I'll try to keep an eye out on the voltages if the USB devices disconnect again. I am also thinking that using the external USB SSD on a USB hub [even if it's the only connected device] might not be okay since it might surcharge the origin USB port.

I realize I might have a very specific case, for me the continuous disconnection / reconnection happened with a USB-C bi-directional switch that allowed me to use my Apple Studio Display with 2 machines, one was a Win 11 laptop, and once I connected it, it started to disconnect and reconnect the switch every 2-3 seconds.

The solution for me was to plug in the laptop with its own charger - I guess it didn't get sufficient amount of power from the switch, which caused the disconnections. I hope this helps someone.

Update. I was trying to use my external HDD and it became pointless because the HDD data connection kept disconnecting and reconnecting as described earlier (phone was doing this too earlier). I could see the files, but would randomly disconnect so I couldn't consistently transfer them completely (was backing files onto my HDD). It irritated me enough that I contacted the Microsoft help desk chat. I noticed something during their 'try another port, try another cable, try another computer' troubleshooting requests that my USB mouse and keyboard didn't have connectivity issues, but those were using USB 2.0 and all the ports that were having issues were USB 3.0. The Windows tech updated Windows drivers for USB 3.0. Note, I had already updated both Windows and attempted to update the drivers earlier that day. They didn't do the recommended "search automatically for files" like I did previously, which said I already was using the current version. For each of the USB 3.0 ports in Device Manager, they updated the drivers manually by choosing to "Browse my computer for drivers" and chose a file that was available. That forced an update. The USB 3.0 now work with thumb drives and my phone. Unfortunately the HDD has now fried through the repeated cycling as the directory is now unreadable and won't connect at all on this or other computers (it was connecting earlier and I could see and open files, but having it connected throughout the entire troubleshooting process with Microsoft it changed to completely unreadable). Good news is that everything else now works when it didn't before. I have had my phone and a thumb drive plugged into the same port for over 30 minutes and no disconnections. I hope that this helps.

That's a great explanation of this issue! I have the EXACT same problem. Using a USB port to charge a device presents no issues, only DATA transfers are affected. It would be nice to see a little input here from Microsoft...

Microsoft, we would really like a solution please. I have patched and updated windows. I have updated the chipset drivers. Still getting the data from USB devices disconnecting. I can't transfer files or even use File Explorer on external hard drives because the device keeps disconnecting (phones and hard drives, all using separate cables and even different USB ports). After a disconnect, file explorer will restart nearly immediately and I will have to go through the file trees again to get where I was and may get a couple of seconds into a transfer or viewing the contents of a folder and it will disconnect again starting the process over again and again. Note that the power on my phone stays connected the entire time. It is only the data connection that is being interrupted with me. If I turn off the data connection on the phone and use it only as a USB charger, I don't get any disconnecting/reconnecting power sounds on the phone. Only when I allow data transfer do I get the found new device sounds pinging multiple times per minute from either the phone, external drives, or computer. MS-7C95 motherboard.
