I've the same issue, on a second PC already.
First PC that had the issue was off since January 2024 and I booted it in 16th of May 2024, I guess it updated in the background and after a few days I started having those random disconnects, I had at least 4-5 minimum per day until I left.
Second PC, is the one that I am on, I've used since January 2024 without an issue until I left on the 15th of May 2024 when I turned it off, when I came back, it worked ok up until yesterday. I had my first random disconnect on this one too and everything just disconnected for a second then reconnected. I couldn't move the mouse nor type on my keyboard for at least 5 seconds.
I've a portable SSD that I use, I will try to see if unplugging it will resolve this issue, then at least we know that its related to SSD/HDD driver issues.
I also uninstalled the last windows update from 4 days ago, just to be sure it's not that.
P.S.: I didn't copy anything on the portable SSD when the disconnects happened. I just had it connected.
I can confidently say that it's not a motherboard issue, it can't be a coincidence having both my motherboards needing an updated driver or both to be defective out of a sudden.
There are no new softwares that I have installed on either PC, other than updates to already existing apps/games.
I've watched my Event Viewer on both PC's when the disconnects happened. They both have the same "Metadata staging failed, result=0x80070490 for container {USB PID code here}" but at this moment I start believing that this is just the result of the disconnect and not the cause of it, but who knows. It's good to keep in mind.
Well, hopefully there will be a resolve to this, since it does affect productivity and leisure time. If I'll have any updates on local fixes, I will post about them.
LE. @Ben Answers : That is actually a very interesting information, I'll try to check the voltages on the USB ports to see if there is any surcharge that causes the random disconnects, but it's still weird that up until now it worked fine and the disconnects just appeared in the last month for me on the two PC's.
L.E2: I forgot to write the actions I took to see if the issue persists :
- I've disabled all the "Let windows disable this device to save power" in Device Manager. [USB controllers and Human Interface Devices]
- I've uninstalled the last windows update "KB5039212" but there's also a security update "KB5037771" that installed in the background today [17.06.2024]
- I've disconnected the external USB SSD drive. [I have a strong feeling that this might be the issue but I'll wait to see if the disconnect happens again]
- I've checked USB voltages and they all seem fine, but also I'll try to keep an eye out on the voltages if the USB devices disconnect again. I am also thinking that using the external USB SSD on a USB hub [even if it's the only connected device] might not be okay since it might surcharge the origin USB port.
