i already have Edge installed still fails
Problem with a windows update KB5031356 (windows 10)
Hello,
I tried to update windows yesterday and ran into some issues, this package : KB5031356 won't install, it downloads it, then it takes some time to install (even though I have a fast NVME SSD) it gets stuck near 20% for a bit, then it goes and goes all the way to 100%, then it gives me this error code : 0x8007000d
Ok so since I know a bit about computers, I have tried a whole bunch of things, also tried to google and look for more fixes, nothing works so far, kind of desperate and I'm affraid I will have to reinstall windows, yet again, it feels like I must do that every year at this point as it always gets corrupted somehow, very strange..
I have tried these classic fixes :
SFC/Scannow
Checkhealth
Scanhealth
Restorehealth
It did find some issues with scannow, which got repaired (supposedly..)
I also tried the troubleshooting apps, as suggested by some websites :
Troubleshooting windows update
Troubleshooting intelligent background (BITS)
I also had issues when some software crashed on me, discord and as I was trying to update my motherboard software, it crashed and other apps started crashing.. so I restarted
I got the updates for the motherboard software to work and managed to fix discord by deleting the folder in the appdata folder, but this indicates some issues I think
I have also noticed something VERY strange, in task manager, a huge number of my services are simply disactivated, here are some screenshots to give an idea :
I suspect some malware potentially aswell, so I ran a whole bunch of scans..
Windows antivirus, nothing
Microsoft security scanner, nothing
Malwarebytes, nothing
Adwcleaner, only find a minor adware it would seem very harmless according to my research, quarantined
I even tried to run the app called windows repair app (from a trusted website, I shall not mention, don't wanna advertise them but if you look it up you'll see it's legit), it runs a bunch of command and powershell to try to repair things, such as repair the microsoft store etc.
A few weeks ago I did change some settings regarding admin rights, as I wanted to remove the bloatware in windows and I was curious to see what was in the windowsapp folder.. following some instructions on some website, I ran some command to allow admin rights, but I think it allowed more than just windowsapp
I was curious to see because I couldn't even check the size of that folder..
I read on reddit it could cause some issues, I thought, perhaps these guys were really not lucky and honestly didn't think some simple permission settings could break windows.
This was a few weeks ago aswell and I'm pretty sure I ran updates since that happened.
Unfortunatly I couldn't find the blog post anymore that I used, I wanted to revert the permissions (it literally opened a cmd or powershell and ran a whole bunch of commands permissions to allow admin rights)
Perhaps some of you know the command to revert that..
like I said I really hope I won't have to reinstall windows yet again..I feel like I'm being hack because this always happens and it's strange issues like these, maybe I'm being a bit paranoid
Could it just be a broken windows update ?? I googled and didn't find anything indicating this could be the case..
Help would be greatly appreciated.

2023-11-15T16:08:40+00:00 New November update KB5032189 Failed to install on 15/11/2023 - 0x8007000d here we go again
Same here. 2 months and many hours spent around kb5031356 and now KB5032189...
Tried everything, including edge reinstall!
No use!
Until the ill-fated kb5031356, my DELL Precision 7750 never gave me the slightest problem.
Let's wait for December update... with security holes in the OS...

2023-11-12T17:57:52+00:00 Hi Jimbo,
It appears that Edge has been uninstalled from the system.
Please see if reinstalling Edge helps. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/download?form=MA13FJ
Thanks Ramesh.
After weeks of suffering, the problem is solved! Finally!
I had 2 computers stuck in these insane update loops related to KB5031356 and the following KB5031445.
Both computers had Edge uninstalled.
After re-installing it, both updates came to an end and the nightmare is over.

2023-11-10T19:07:56+00:00 Yes, when I switched from our hardened version of Win2k and onto the Win10 platform, we found several security intrusions including office 365 which redirects all clicks to a Microsoft server which purportedly evaluates the web page you are selecting and after recording your click, forwards you to an address they consider "safe". This integrates well with edge, so edge and office 365 had to go. Microsoft simply wants to track us. We had meetings with MS senior execs and explored this, and we came to the conclusion that for security reasons, we didn't want to authorize this tracking.
So, if this works, we will have to install edge for every update then uninstall it. I suppose if this works, I can get our IT manager to develop a script to "Update for Update" which would conceivably install edge, update, reboot, and uninstall edge.
Another thing: edge is a poor excuse for a browser. And we didn't need another browser. Bing is MS's earlier entry into browsing, and it too was poorly executed. I would think they would have learned from the Bing experience.
Lastly, I would think that MS could output different error codes based on what they know caused the update to fail. Or they could update what is installed omitting things that have been uninstalled. If something is uninstalled, and you want to reinstall it, I would guess that MS would have the on-line installer install the up-to-date version of the feature.
And yes, we are extremely concerned with Azure, for the same reasons.
I'll try this and get back to you, but now I must do some real work.
Thanks for your help.
Jimbo
