Device Setup Manager Metadata staging failed Event ID 131

I did KB 890830, KB5032339, KB5032189 and KB4023057 today and on reboot after updating I started getting many of the event id 131 Device Setup Manager Metadata staging failed.  I would get the code 131 when plugging in my backup USB external.  Even when using USB thumb drive- this never happen prior to today's update.  Also, lots of the Event ID on boot. Never had these prior to the update. I am on WIndows 10 PRo, 22H2, OS Build 19045.3693, Dell OPtiplex 64 bit, 12GB memory and 500GB disk.

I got to looking at the registry for devicemedadataserviceURL.  I went to that URL (go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=252669&clcid=0x409) and got redirected  as site not available to  dmd.metaservices.microsoft.com where I pressed continue and got a 505 Bad Gateway error.

And then just for the heck of it I did a DISM with /checkhealth and all was good, did DISM with /scanhealth and it said all was fine.  Even did sfc /scannow and chkdsk, all was well. NO system files missing or disk problems.

Then I did some thinking (which can be dangerous)  Booting or adding external drives got many of the 131 errors.  However when I disconnect from the internet and boot system or add external drives-  I GOT NO ERRORS Event code131.

Between all this, I believe our friends at Microsoft have a bad pointer. in the registry entry devicemedadataserviceURL.

I did an image of system prior to updating, thought about restore and still considering.  All is working fine, I tried all devices and all are working.  I shouldn't look at that event log!  I just today after the mentioned above updates started getting these errors.

I should add going to control Panel, search for Device Installation, select change device installation setting to NO- does fix the error.  Tested, reboot or adding external drive no longer gets the 131 error.  Now is this a good idea, I don't know, I am not that up on computers anymore.  I retired in 2003 after 38 years as system software tech on mainframes.  Was certified also for Microsoft, but a lot changed since then and I really don't attempt to keep up.

This is going on 4+ months now. If I were a conspiracy theorist, and who isn’t, I’d suspect that some White Hat discovered a vulnerability in the driver update system that could have exposed every Windows 10 and 11 machine, or MS itself, and they’ve just shut it down as a precaution. Of course, that’s just me. If that we true, would we hear about it?

This issue has been reoccurring on my 3k gaming pc i built. I thought windows 11 was a step forward but i was wrong.

At least some cuck independent advisor hasn't come in here and closed/Resolved the topic with generic misleading response XD.

At Windows 11 the same line points to:

    https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=2257403&clcid=0x409

the result is = Service Unavailable. Please try again later.

And as many others here, I have huge event errors ID 131 (metadata staging failed) - so, i think, it's time Microsoft try to fix this issue.

    regards

    w

I'm experiencing the same problems. They started 10 days ago. ...The PC constantly makes sounds when devices are connected and disconnected. Some drivers do not want to be reinstalled. I don’t understand what’s happening.

    L T9:

What is your computer make / model and operating system (please let us know if it is a Home or Pro edition as well as the version and OS build number shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications)? Does your computer manufacturer have a support page for your computer model that maintains a list of recommended software and hardware drivers for your computer model?

The DeviceSetupManager Event ID 131 errors being discussed in this thread do not cause any noticeable problems on my Dell Inspiron 5584 laptop (e.g., like high CPU activity) so I'm just ignoring them for now and will wait to see if Microsoft releases a bug fix. If you think these errors are causing an issue on your own computer then use the workaround posted <here> on 23-Dec-2023 on page 1 of this thread (i.e., change the Device Installation Settings to "No" in your Advanced System Settings) to see if this stops your DeviceSetupManager Event ID 131 errors.

    Dell Inspiron 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.3930 * Firefox v122.0.0 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.23110.3-1.1.23110.2 * Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.8.311-1.0.2249 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7783

You can try an in-place update which fixes many Windows problems. I had asimiar problem about 2 weeks ago and this fixed it: https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/6000015-repair-install-of-windows-10-22h2/#post-2582939

So organizations with 10s of thousands of Wintel machines need to do an in-place upgrade on each one of them in order to fix this issue that is caused by Microsoft-hosted Metadata Staging Servers being unreachable by every Wintel machine around the planet?

Try adding a printer and see how long it takes for it to be moved from the "Unspecified" device group to the "Printers" device group. Choose ADVANCED SYSTEM SETTINGS in the right-panel of the ABOUT screen (accessible from the SYSTEM Settings screen) and Hardware tab --> Device Installation Settings --> Answer this question: DO YOU WANT TO AUTOMATICALLY DOWNLOAD MANUFACTURES' APPS AND CUSTOM ICONS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR DEVICES? *YES (RECOMMENDED) OR *NO (YOUR DEVICE MIGHT NOT WORK AS EXPECTED).

On any of my thousands and thousands of systems, when YES (default) is the selected option, it takes several minutes and, when NO is selected, it is instantaneous.

I demonstrated it for a crowd of Microsoft Support engineers. They quickly got the point and sent this case to the group responsible for the Metadata Staging servers.
