I plug this external cd player in but there is no response in the laptop.

First off, thanks to you all for taking the time to offer me help with the issue of non-recognition of my cd/dvd drive. The good news is that the problem sorted itself out after one of Microsoft's periodic upgrades. (Miracles DO sometimes happen-even with Microsoft!)
