So why did I get 27 metadata errors after yesterday's updates? If it's not looking for printer icons, what else would it be looking for at that URL?

Germany banned 365 in school infrastructure because you cannot disable the "ET Phone Home" nature of the application. The European Commision even reported itself for breaching GDPR by using it.

If you have ever tried disabling the Windows built in Compatibility Telemetry Runner you will know that it ignores all the registry settings that are supposed to disable it. Just watch your Task Manager if you install or remove any software even after you disable it. Google Chrome has a similar feature called software reporter that is equally hard to disable.

See here, I have some custom icons for my razor gamepad but the elite controller is still a generic icon. But its trying to find custom icons and apps for these devices. My hunch is they are depreciating this Device view as you have to dig for this view.

This could be related to printers. Example: On server 2012R2, when you install printer server role it will have a notification prompt in the print management windows asking if you want metadata for your devices. if you click yes it would download the custom icon of the printer. IF you select no or ignore , it would keep the generic printer icons.
