How to Unlock a Device Locked Using Find my Device in the Microsoft Account

I have a Windows 11 laptop. I inadvertently locked the laptop when I logged into my Microsoft Account and it showed the device was located in a different part of the Country from where I am located. After locking the device, I realized it was my personal laptop (in my possession, not where it was shown to be on the map). I am now trying to unlock it but cannot locate anywhere in my online Microsoft Account where to do so. My user pin and fingerprint aren't being recognized. Can anyone help?

    There is only one right answer on this forum and the answer above is it.

    My issue stemmed from using Microsoft find my phone and I locked my surface pro w/ windows 11. These steps can be a pain but they do work.

    Couple key notes that may only pertain to my device.

    1. Make sure when you load hive, you are in the C directory.
    2. Don’t forget to click sign in options and use the password you normally would use for logging into your device managed Microsoft account.. kinda like the one you used to lock the device in the first place.

    Just following up in case anyone encounters the issue again, I was unable to login to my computer after accidentally locking my own desktop as I thought I was locking a suspicious device, I canceled the locking process (thought i did) but a day after I did so the computer was locked with the message I wrote when locking it, when logging in it said, administrator access is required to log in, but I am the administrator of my computer, I changed the sign in option to password instead of my 4 digit pin and it worked and let me in, I had to reset my pin afterwards for it to work again but it did work and I didn't have to reinstall, you need to use your windows password not windows hello/pin

    Thank God for this thread, wasted half a day speaking to 2 IT people, advice was to format but really didn't want to do that. This worked a treat.

    Stephen, I have the proper solution in the reply above. I also reset the PC using Dave's advice and was left with the same issue. I should have prefaced my solution with these details, as it allows the all of your data and settings to be preserved.

    Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

    When you use the Lock option to remotely lock your device on the 'Find my Device' web page, the only option to get back into Windows is to reset Windows, you will not be able to log into the PC normally, usually you will see a notification that an Administrator needs to unlock the device, even though you are the administrator.

    Click the power button on the Login screen.
    Press the Shift Key and click Restart
    Your PC will boot into the Windows Recovery Environment
    Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - Reset this PC
    Choose to keep your files and apps.
    Then start the Reset

    Lovely advice, reset the PC, still the same issue, so wrong advice for my circumstances
