Location Issue on my laptop with Windows 11

From my Microsoft Account profile page, if I click "Find my device" or "Show my location" in Bing Map (Default map comes with Windows) it shows my current location in Seattle, even though my laptop is in Toronto Canada. However, if I open my browser and open Bing map or Google Maps, it shows my correct location. Also to solve this issue I tried reinstalling Windows twice, using a VPN to set my location the same as where I live, I ran Windows troubleshooter multiple times. I can't think of any more troubleshooting steps on my own.

Windows 11 Pro / 23H2 / OS Build: 22631.3296

Hi, I had the same frustating problem after updating to Windows 11. I live in Brisbane, Australia and location appears as Melbourne, Australia. What I finally found to work was going to Internet Options, Connections, Lan Settings, and un-clicking the box; Automatically Detect Settings, save and restart Windows. Google maps and Waze now have my location to within a few metres instead of thousands of kilometres. Hope this works for others. Cheers, John.

Interesting, we probably have different but similar bugs then. I have a feeling mine was ISP related because a) it started happening on my iPhone and b) the solution I was able to use didn't work for other people. My computer was outright unable to use location services, on all browsers, so if stuff like other browsers or the Maps app are working for you, I would assume an Edge-specific problem.

It is just the Edge browser with the issue. All other browsers and apps work fine. The default windows location is already correct on my PC and does nothing to change what Edge will report. You can even change the windows default location to something random and Edge will still report back Boydton VA

Yea, I've already tried that. I can set my default location in the Maps app, but Edge still wants to show me in Boydton.

I have this same issue and it's super annoying. Edge, and the Maps app, in Windows 11, locates me in Boydton , VA, even though I'm in the Dallas, TX area. Chrome, however, does NOT have this issue, on the same system. Utterly ridiculous.

I had this exact same issue happen to me (and multiple other people have as well), all within the last two weeks. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with the ISP or any specific browsers. I think Windows location services are entirely failing for you and me, and the computer's default seems to be set to Boydton, since that's where the data center is.

I was able to band-aid the problem by going to Windows Settings -> Privacy & security -> Location, and changing the "Default location" setting via the "Set default" button.

    Image

This box should show up in the top-left corner with the Boydton address (I blocked out my own address which this is now set to). Click "Change" and enter your address, or alternatively you can click the "Choose location" thing under it and you can pick the exact spot you want the computer to think you are.

This allowed for everything I use to default to my address instead of defaulting to Boydton, hence "fixing" the issue since my PC isn't moving anywhere. This doesn't actually fix the issue with the location services that happened to people though, so if you bring your PC/laptop somewhere else and the issue still happens, you would have to do this again to match wherever you are.

Let me know if this doesn't work, since that would mean that the same issue appeared for multiple people at once but the band-aid solution doesn't work for every instance of it.

    Hello Doyoon Park,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community!

Understanding that you are currently experiencing a Microsoft account login positioning gap is too large, this problem may be caused by the network environment. I noticed that you are using some software such as a web proxy, which may also display the IP address incorrectly. The current Microsoft network locator function can be referenced: Windows location service and privacy - Microsoft Support

In the meantime, I'll provide some network setup related troubleshooting options to help you try to solve the problem:

    1. Search CMD, open and find the command prompt (run in administrator mode) In the command box that pops up, enter the following commands in order (after each line has finished running, enter the next one) ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /registerdns netsh int ip reset netsh winsock reset netsh winhttp reset proxy Restart the computer to see if the problem can be solved.
    2. Tap windows+R, type inetcpl.cpl, open Internet Options, click Connections, tap LAN Settings, check if the Proxy Server column is checked, if it is, uncheck it and tap OK, restart your computer after applying it to see if you can solve the problem.

If the issue has a significant impact on your experience, you can submit your question through the Feedback Hub (if convenient, please provide as much detail as possible, including images, videos, etc.)

Once submitted, please share the feedback link and I will submit your feedback to the relevant team for investigation through internal channels.

We hope you find the above steps helpful, if you don't understand or have any questions, please feel free to contact us!

    Best Regards,

Clint Qian| Microsoft Community Support Specialist
