Hi

I just made the asked the messenger update, and now all external links opens up in EDGE instead of my default browser. And I see no option to set it back.

Otherwise, the method of downloading an older version doesn't seem to work anymore, it just gets me a copy of Messenger that has an overlay telling me I have to update to keep using it, which I can only make go away by hitting the button and then actually updating it (by installing the garbage version through Edge).

My copy of the old (non-browser-based) app does try to get me to update when it first starts after rebooting the PC, but I have the option of "not now" or something (I don't remember the wording at the moment). And it works much better than the newer app I uninstalled - it has a memory-resident piece that knows when a call is coming in even when the main app is not open, which the Edge-based app did not.

I use Firefox, which is not a Chromium browser, and Messenger audio/video calls no longer support Firefox, so I need to use a Messenger app that is independent of the browser. For all the folks who are using Chromium-based browsers, I don't know why you need an app at all, because apparently you can just do all your Messenger stuff in a normal tab of your browser. I leave a Messenger tab open at all times, but that no longer works for calling.

I was getting the "not now" for the last week or so, with the date I had to update by going out a day further with each day that passed, so I was ignoring it. Yesterday, however, it took that option away from me. I don't do calls or video, so the tab-based version (which I didn't know was a thing, that Messenger had its own site, basically) will be fine for me and my mom, but this decision Meta and Microsoft have made is obviously still bad, as with cases like yours. It's a really bizarre business move, part laziness and part throwing away some control over a product.

The correct solution was given above, but I think it missed one step. Unless you uninstall Messenger first, Chrome won't give you the option (at least for me)

    1. Go to "add or remove programs" in Windows settings and uninstall messenger.
    2. Open chrome
    3. Go to messenger.com -- login if needed
    4. Click 3 dots on upper right
    5. Look for Cast, save, and share
    6. Click Install page as app

The good news is, because the app is just an edge browser, using a Chrome browser it will look exactly the same as the app, except for being Chrome. Well... you may need to do Ctrl-scroll wheel to change the zoom level, or Ctrl-+ and -

I'm also confused about this, because the three dots I'm seeing are for Messenger conversation info. I'm using Vivaldi, which is a Chromium browser, so if what you're describing is a function of Chrome specifically, then I can just look up how to potentially do this in my own browser.

Otherwise, the method of downloading an older version doesn't seem to work anymore, it just gets me a copy of Messenger that has an overlay telling me I have to update to keep using it, which I can only make go away by hitting the button and then actually updating it (by installing the garbage version through Edge). This is so frustrating, because this is how my mom and I communicate.

Ever since the Messenger app became an "Edge" app, it's been total garbage. The notifications are unusable, the links open in a browser that no one wants or uses and the user experience is way worse than before. Unbelievable that someone would publish this in 2024. This feels 2004.

The main issue is the Windows messenger cant receive or get notified when someone calls, no ringing or notification of missed call, even when notifications are turned on. Anyone else have this issue and know how to fix it? FB messenger Support offers no help, they dont even respond
