We upgraded to 24H2 and now our SCR3310 card reader is no longer recognized and we now cannot log in with our CAC card. Is there a fix?

We downloaded latest drivers, removed and reinstalled the driver, tried different USB ports. It shows up as working properly in Device Mgr but that's it. The light won't come on, it ignores the reader. Help.

so I fixed mine with multiple ways and don't know which one 100% fixes.

I went to device manger and uninstalled the CAC reader.

I grabbed the process name S3XXx64.sys from the driver error and went into the registry and deleted anything that popped up as it ( I recommend restarting the computer after, mine kind of didn't like it ).

I also turned off memory integrity after i deleted the process from the registry. after you turn it off, I tried turning it back on, it presented me with the driver issues i needed to fix in order to re-enable the memory integrity, after registry deletion it turns back on without issues.

! be aware when turning off the memory integrity and enforced-stack protection that it might give you errors in drivers or apps to correct to re-enable. !

after all that it works fine, the rest is just certificate problems because of the new year so make sure you pick the right one when signing in.

    so:

    • delete all S3XXx64.sys from registry

-turn off memory integrity ( potentially optional )

    -delete device from "device manager"

Hope it helps. I'm not a expert. Happy new year :)

    JHTN's fix worked, thanks!

I did everything in various orders of deleting drivers, rebooting, attaching the card reader, using the Identive drivers, using MS drivers, etc. In total I spent about 3 hours troubleshooting including using a different CAC reader with the same issues. Tried this and followed the guide from: https://tech.springcard.com/2014/pcsc-troubleshooting-on-windows/

I'd definitely give this a shot for anyone else having issues since the update and not waste your time with the other attempts like I did.

The dumbest oldest trick in the book (rebooting) worked for me, as well! Not sure if the order matters, but I installed the update before restarting.

Microsoft have probably corrected issue between first availability of upgrade (november) and begin of December.

@JHTN give an answer for how to resolve issue :

    -Run Regedit.exe:

    • Go to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\Calais

-Check the permissions for LOCAL SERVICE (if not there, add it). Make it "Full Control":

    • Right-click on the key (Calais) and select "Permissions..." from the pop-up menu

    • Click on LOCAL SERVICE to select it

    • Allow "Full Control"

    -Reboot computer

I have two of these SCR3500 card readers, and both became inoperable after installing Microsoft's 24H2 Windows 11 release. Device Manager indicated that the driver was functioning correctly and the device was operational, but the readers would not read the CAC card—consistent with what others have reported.

The only resolution I found, regardless of any changes to core isolation settings or anything else, was to roll back the 24H2 release. This rollback seemed to be the only effective fix at the time.

However, here's where things get confusing. While dealing with this issue, I rebuilt another laptop and reset it to factory settings (Windows 10). During the patching process, it upgraded to Windows 11, including the 24H2 release. I decided to test my two SCR3500 readers on this machine, and surprisingly, they worked without issue.

This leads me to wonder if a patch or update for the 24H2 release has since resolved the card reader problems. Has anyone else checked for updates or installed anything recently to address this issue? I'm curious if others have seen similar results or have insights into this strange inconsistency. Reason I ask, is i wonder if its safe now to re-install the 24H2 on my original laptop?
