Issue with Microphone Volume with Intel SST on Windows 11 24H2

Hi

So I'm now a bit out of my depth but I have the contents of the oem199.inf file which relates to the changes made that messed up my microphone.

From what I can tell it does a lot of registry changes in and around the Intel SST driver - and in my case screws it up.

My guess is that it isn't Windows 11 24H2 per se as I have installed all those updates without issue but an update similar to this one which tries to be too clever with the audio drivers .

If there is someone more expert who can decipher the information below and explain what it is doing and how to reverse some of it that would be great.

Meantime I'm going to back it out and get my microphone working again....

So when I went to 24H2 I got the problem but I noticed that the upgrade included a lot of device driver updates and security patches.

So I went back to a recovery point and then used group policy to change windows update to only download and not install updates. I was then able to do a few updates at a time creating recovery points as I went.

That way I was able to upgrade to 24H2 ok

Then I went along with the RealTek, Intel and other drivers a few at a time till I narrowed it down to one which definitely caused it.

Do you get a change to the sound test page for the microphone when the error occurs.

I noticed that the “focus on voice : on/off” option disappeared and was replaced by an “ audio enhancement : default enhancement/ off” option. At that point choosing off killed the sound to almost inaudible.

So although initially it looked like it was the move to Windows 11 24H2 by breaking it down I found the particular update out of over 50 that caused it.

I checked for the Waves Audio update, but unfortunately, it’s not available on my laptop, so I wasn’t able to test whether it could help. I suspect that Waves is a feature built into Dell laptops, whereas I have a Lenovo ThinkPad. Also, as soon as I update to Windows 11 24H2, the microphone volume issue appears, and rolling back to 23H2 immediately fixes it.

Because of this, I believe my problem is directly linked to changes in 24H2 rather than a driver update. So, unfortunately, I think my issue is not related to yours…

Anyway, Windows updates seem to be causing quite a few headaches lately! :/

I found this but haven't tried it but it shows how you can check if you have specific oem drivers installed and if so remove them.

If you are having the microphone issue then maybe removing the problem  inf will fix it.

This should reverse the update "Waves (Extension) 6.0.22.0

I think the oem files are created with arbitrary names of the form oemnnn.inf , where nnn is a sequential number. So it might not be 199 for you.

Plan to reinstall problem patch and see if the oem files has any useful information in it.

I have been doing some extensive research.

Unless you are interested I won't bore you with the length I had to go to to get this far (involved Group Policy, Restore points , PowerShell and complete reinstall of Windows11 and 3 days work , not including 3 days wasted being led up the wrong alley by Dell support)

I have narrowed it down to this update:

Waves (Extension) - 6.0.22.0

After installing I get the issue with the internal microphone - also the test page changes so that voice focus option disappears.

If I restore using last Restore Point, taken just before the update the test page returns to having "Voice Focus" option and microphone works as it should.

The restore point indicated only the following file was affected and would be removed:

Waves (Extension) 15/08/2023 6.0.22.0 (oem 199.inf)

It isn't to do with the version of Windows 11 as I have managed to go to Windows 11 24H2 and apply several cumulative updates.

I've also installed all the Intel and RealTek drives that came up - expecting them to be the culprits but it kept working until the Waves update.

Not sure how easy it is to back this out if you don't have a restore point or how to necessarily prevent it from installing again.

I changed my Windows Update policy through group policy to only download and not automatically install so I could do a controlled process with multiple restore points and selecting which updates to do next
