Overview: running Win10 pro in 16GB RAM on a Minisforum UM700 (just under 3 years old], AMD Ryzen Mobile 3750H. 256 GB SSD with 95 GB free...
Upgrade continually fails. My hardware is just fine (in spec}, I have 96GB of drive space,. I have spent 4 days on this, Tried the "Upgrade assisyant" - [Cryptic Installation failed message}, tried via newly d/l'd ISO [fails with error 0x8007007f], I have tried from a USB drive created in Media Creator [fails with cryptic message "Installation has failed" in a Windows system dialog box].
I have run SFC /SCANNOW and whatever the other recommended utility is to verify system integrity.
I have scoured the forums and worn out Google search - PLEASE someone help me! I thought MS wanted [nay are begging] us to upgrade, yet this is a nightmare. Thankfully I have started the process in plenty of time before the Day of Death in October. I see from the forums that I am far from alone in this problem, and yet, no clear resolution seems to be available,
I don't want to upgrade - my system in 10 is stable and I know where everything lives If I can't get resolution I shall be forced to finally go over to Linux and all the complications that would entail.
Insult to injury, MS are killing off Skype which has been the core of my comms forever.
I hope someone out there can solve this with clear concise instructions - no, I do not want to do a clean install: that is not what MS promised when they unleashed the mandatory upgrade on us.

PS The upgrade install seems to fail when it tries to reboot at the end of the process, despite having "checked my system" at the outset....

Clean boot is a very safe procedure. The problem happens mostly because the user forgets to enable the "Hide all Microsoft Services" checkbox before clicking the "Disable all" button.)
Ran rebuildbcd to no avail.
Re - Downloaded the ISO and tried the "guided install". No avail - returned 0x8007007f on failure.
Ran from the ISO, which wanted to destroy my data and installed app.... (No way!).
Made a new installer USB and ran from setup. failed with another obscure error message..
This is driving me nuts _COME ON MICROSOFT! Help! You are begging us to upgrade, but absent when there is a problem.
In answer ro "Questions" on March 12th: I am not experiencing BSOD's so your propesed fixes seem irrelevant
Anyone??? I know I am not the only only having this issue when trying to obey the mandatory upgrade. And, no I don't want to pay for extended support for the rest of my life just because MS cannot provide help.

I sahll try that BCD rebuild as you suggest: the upgrade is a tedious process and not just a one-click-and-done thing. so it won't be immediate.
I am well aware of loss of security updayes if I fail to upgrade, something that I am unwilling to risj in these days of rampant cybercrime!
This is not the smooth process that MSoft promised us: I am not even getting to offer through the Widows Update module... And the lack of direct support from MS is, I guess, par for the course with them.
Will advise when I next have a chance to lose 2+ hours of my life doing the upgrade from scratch...

Hello,
If you would like, you can attempt to rebuild the BCD by opening up a Command Prompt window in WinRE (or WinPE/Windows Setup) and then typing bootrec /rebuildbcd and pushing enter and see if that does something.
For a direct chat with Microsoft, you can go to https://support.microsoft.com/contactus and then speak to a real representative there.
If none of the steps work, you can also stay on Windows 10 after the EOS date, it's just that you won't get anymore security updates (unless you pay for them) and that you might be at risk of viruses.

Sorry about the delay in getting back: other more time-critical MSoft-induced issues too priority.
I re-ran sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth, all clear, and then chkdsk /b on the C: (system drive, likewise clear.
I then reran the update from the USB install - same result, all the way through to the reboot. I was unable to make a next copy of the log file as the reboot occasioned a BSOD. When I tried to get into recovery, I eventually got the system up but with only one display detected... I have now given up for the day (am on another machine!), but will return to the issue and try and get my system back to as it was, probably by a system restore, and then start again
Reading up on your deduction that it the updater was not finding some of the items in the BCD, sunds likely,,, Perhaps I should rebuild the BCD file?
Anybody out there got any ideas? I know I am not the only one with this issue! Microsoft - you should be able to help, as it is you are are forcing this upgrade on us... Is there a direct line to a MS help chat line: given that the upgrade process takes a couple of hours, the lag in responses though this or any other forum makes losing the mental thread a certainty.
