Win 11 Version 24H2 Install Failed

Anonymous

I tried to install Win 11 Version 24H2 for the second time, and it failed for a second time. The first BSOD message gave the following info:

Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart.

Stop code: INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE

After a couple of restarts, the update was backed out. I'm back on Windows 11 Pro Version 23H2.

I checked the update history and saw the Install error code - 0xc1900101.

Before I tried the 24H2 update, I did the following:

Unplug unnecessary USB devices

Drivers were updated

No issues in Device Manager

I have 30GB of free space on the drive

Any help would be appreciated,

    Hi,

    1. It seems the CompatTelRunner command didn't run correctly.

    Please try this.

    schtasks.exe /Run /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser"

Wait for 2 to 3 minutes.

    Then run the following command:

    REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\TargetVersionUpgradeExperienceIndicators" /s

    Post the output here.

    1. Uninstall Avast.

Avast Removal Tool | Download Avast Clear | Avast: https://www.avast.com/en-in/uninstall-utility#pc

    1. Clean boot windows.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support:

(Step 3 in the above link is very important. You need to first enable "Hide all Microsoft Services" before clicking "Disable all".)

    1. Share your Farbar scan logs.

Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool 64-bit (FRST64.exe)

    https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/

    (or)

    https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mbst-frst64

Note: If Microsoft Edge or Chrome mislabels the Farbar Scanner executable as PUA/malware, choose to keep it by tapping … in the bottom bar, choosing Keep, and then choosing Keep anyway in the dialog that appears.

See this screenshot: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/media/microsoft-edge-security-download-interruptions/dowload-was-blocked.png. It's a safe tool used in most antimalware forums.

If the OS language is not English, rename FRST64.exe to FRST64English.exe.

Run the program. Don't check or uncheck any options. Click "Scan".

Add the two logs, FRST.txt and Addition.txt, to a Zip archive, share them on OneDrive or GoFile.io and post the link here.

    Ramash,

Since the 24H2 update is no longer showing, I only preformed the following:

    • Enable Memory Integrity. To enable memory integrity in Windows, go to Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details > Memory integrity. If it shows any incompatible drivers, post the screenshot here. < Memory Integrity was enabled, but no incompatible drivers were showing>
    • Check for gated blocks. Open Command Prompt and run this command: The results are below:

Hi, thank you for that information. After checking and analyzing the event files you have, there are general errors in the event files. Moreover, since the main issue is the Windows update, I suggest doing an in-place upgrade, wherein it will upgrade the device to the latest version and repair all issues without deleting any files.

Kindly follow the steps from this link:

    Please do the following:

    • Enable Memory Integrity. To enable memory integrity in Windows, go to Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details > Memory integrity. If it shows any incompatible drivers, post the screenshot here.
    • To avoid third-party software interference, perform a clean boot on the system before running the setup. A clean boot is the process of starting Windows without loading any third-party applications or services. For more information, please refer to the Microsoft article.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows-da2f9573-6eec-00ad-2f8a-a97a1807f3dd
(Step 3 in the above link is very important. You need to first enable "Hide all Microsoft Services" before clicking "Disable all".)

    • Uninstall 3rd party antivirus if installed; you can reinstall it after the upgrade. After uninstalling it, restart Windows.
    • Check for gated blocks. Open Command Prompt and run this command: CompatTelRunner.exe -m:appraiser.dll -f:DoScheduledTelemetryRun

It should complete within two minutes. After it completes, run the following command:

    REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\TargetVersionUpgradeExperienceIndicators" /s

    Post the output here.
