Files have a brown box on their icon and dont open in Windows 11

Penny - WOOT, WOOT! THIS FIXED IT FOR ME TOO! After an hour of research, I did what you did - simply typed OneDrive into the Windows 11 search field and clicked Open. Boom - brown boxes gone an files are accessible.

Have you tried this: Right-click on the file or folder: then go to "Show more options" > "Smart Sync" > and then switch the file status to "local" (rather than "Online Only" ? I read in an earlier post that the brown box was signifying that the file was really just a shortcut to online. So if you wanted it to be the actual file and not a shortcut, you have to switch the status in Smart Sync.

What is going on here? There is no information anywhere so it obviously isnt a problem for everyone.

Most of my files stored on Dropbox now have a small brown file box icon on the lower left corner of the main icon for all MS Office files. They open perfectly well on the phone and a laptop running Windows 10 but not on my laptop running Windows 11.

I get an error message saying the program cant open it because the file is unsupported or may be corrupt.

Why the **** do they release an OS that doesn't work with their own programs??

I have this problem too and can't find a solution.

I don't know if this will be helpful, but I went to go click on the right-click the dropbox icon in the system tray to check my sync settings, and the icon wasn't there. I realized that dropbox wasn't "running". I started up dropbox, and once it started running, the brown box was replaced by the appropriate dropbox sync icon (grey cloud, closed green circle+white check, open green circle+green check), and I was able to access those files again. I hope this works for you and everyone else who is having this issue because it was driving me crazy that there were absolutely no posted resolutions to the issue anywhere online.

This is EXACTLY what the problem is. It's a Dropbox issue, as far as it seems. Once I fired up Dropbox, my ugly brown file box overlay disappeared and was replaced with a cloud. All of my files can now be opened just fine.

Ok ... I didn't notice an x on the tray. I was just trying everything before I saw your note.

I typed in OneDrive in the search bar. It didn't give me an option to sign in, BUT maybe it signed me in automatically. Now all the brown file boxes are gone, and I'm able to open the files as usual.

So, not sure exactly what did it, but it seems to be resolved.

That makes sense, Powella1 and Diane. I just still find it hard to believe that even that bit of information isn’t available to help someone with this issue. I’ve seen online questions about the brown boxes dating back to 2021 and no answers or information has ever been provided that is anywhere close to being as helpful as what you’ve just explained.
