Gmail using Windows Live Mail after May 30, 2022

Can someone tell me how to set up to use Windows Live Mail for Gmail after the May 30, 2022 Gmail changes. There is something I have read about "app passwords" which sounds a lot like what Yahoo has done. I have about 75 clients who use WLM. Most of them have Gmail accounts.

I would rather not have to switch to a different mail client.

I would appreciate very much if someone could provide a step by step how to. I suspect there are several millions others like us.

Here's the procedure outlined by Kevin, as an edited quote, derived from several of his messages:

"Came across a work around which I hope will keep working come June 1st.

You need to go into your Google account and it is under Security. Turn on "2 Step Authentication" for each Gmail account and then add an App Password for WLM. You just need to generate the App Password from Google Security and then use that when you update your email ie send/ receive in your WLM. When you update your email ie send/ receive in WLM it will prompt you for this password instead of your Gmail password. The option to turn on/off Less Secure Apps in my security settings disappeared once I turned on 2 Step Authentication."

The previous version of this message also linked to a third video which I thought MIGHT also have a good solution but IT DID NOT. Which is why I've removed that third link. Specifically, you can NO LONGER ACCESS GMAIL if you are using the Less Secure Apps option in the Gmail security settings. Sorry about that.

    Kevin, thank you for this. I tried but could not figure out how to do the Gmail app password. Would you please provide much more detail on how to do this? If that works, it would save about 25 clients of mine a lot of trouble.

    FYI, I have about 75 clients now (down from about 150) all using Windows 7. About half of them use WLM. WLM is far and away the best mail program. For many years, virtually every OEM shipped PC came with Windows Live Essentials, which includes WLM. I think it was because Microsoft was paying them to include it on their PCs. So literally hundreds of millions of people use it even today.

    Background: First there was Outlook Express. It came bundled in as part of Windows XP. Then came Windows Mail, which came with Vista. Then MS brought out Windows 7 and declared that there would be no mail package included with Win7, which was contradicted by the fact that Windows Live Essentials was included (not as part of Win7 but part of the OEM PC) and it included WLM.

    Outlook Express was a limited version of Microsoft Outlook which was a purchased package usually bundled with Microsoft Office. Windows Mail was an improved version of Outlook Express. WLM is a yet more improved version of Windows Mail. The biggest improvement that WLM brought was the elimination of the technique of storing emails in a database and instead creating individual files for each mail item. That made WLM much more reliable and sturdy.

    Aside: WLM2011 was superior to WLM2012. Microsoft tried to improve the 2011 version and botched it. Then in the end they realized that they could sell ads by making people use webmail and did their best to discourage mail programs which for you and I eliminates ads.

    What Google is doing today, is an extension of that.
