Gmail using Windows Live Mail after May 30, 2022

Can someone tell me how to set up to use Windows Live Mail for Gmail after the May 30, 2022 Gmail changes. There is something I have read about "app passwords" which sounds a lot like what Yahoo has done. I have about 75 clients who use WLM. Most of them have Gmail accounts.

I would rather not have to switch to a different mail client.

I would appreciate very much if someone could provide a step by step how to. I suspect there are several millions others like us.

Here's the procedure outlined by Kevin, as an edited quote, derived from several of his messages:

"Came across a work around which I hope will keep working come June 1st.

You need to go into your Google account and it is under Security. Turn on "2 Step Authentication" for each Gmail account and then add an App Password for WLM. You just need to generate the App Password from Google Security and then use that when you update your email ie send/ receive in your WLM. When you update your email ie send/ receive in WLM it will prompt you for this password instead of your Gmail password. The option to turn on/off Less Secure Apps in my security settings disappeared once I turned on 2 Step Authentication."

The previous version of this message also linked to a third video which I thought MIGHT also have a good solution but IT DID NOT. Which is why I've removed that third link. Specifically, you can NO LONGER ACCESS GMAIL if you are using the Less Secure Apps option in the Gmail security settings. Sorry about that.

    Yes, I found the same thing. My outgoing didn't work, even after the app password, until I matched the outgoing with the incoming. Then everything worked fine.

    You know, it's interesting. For three solid weeks, I googled and googled to try to find help to make the transition from WLM to another email client, knowing that this change to google was coming down the pike, and not even dreaming we would be able to make WLM work past the transition. Not a single thread or recommendation could I find anywhere. It was as if the entire planet was totally unaware this was happening, even though google sent out the warning email about a month ago.

    And then, barely 48 hours before this was supposed to happen, Canadian Tech posted his query and suddenly the dam broke and folks jumped in with advice. Clearly the folks who knew the score were all ready to provide advice; it was just that no one thought to ask until the last minute. If that hadn't happened, we would probably have all been struggling to transition from WLM to another email app, a painful, frustrating and prolonged process. We're so lucky we didn't have to do that -- for now.

    Well, googling does not reveal a vast outcry of pain from WLM users - yet.

    Victoria, you should also consider a probably longer term and better solution:

    1. Set up your own website with email managed by you. You would have your own addresses and could feed them to WLM. You may be surprised to find out how inexpensive and easy this to do.
    2. Consider using a paid service. There are several around. Most are designed for businesses. I have been using Network General for 20 years now and their service is simply excellent. I use WLM for this site as well as Yahoo and Gmail.
