Find network access credentials windows 10 or 11

I've been running my local (wired) network with password protected sharing turned off.

To reduce the risk of infection I've now turned it on on all the pc's.

The result is that I am now unable to access any of the machines on the network (running windows 10 or 11)

I need to input the username and password

However using whoami locally to get the username, and entering the pin as the password I get

"the username or password is incorrect"

trying to access another machine I get "\XXXXX is not accessible. ... etc."

Is there a simple way I can turn on machine A and determine what credentials are required to access it from another PC via the network?

    Been there - done that. Does not work! It has something to do with microsoft's passwordless accounts. I finally - after trying everything I've read everywhere used my PHONE number for user name and skipped the password and it actually connected!

    Go figure!

    This was unexpectedly helpful. It works. After a few hours of solutions searching it found that this one works! Mind blowing.

    I am not sure this solution turned up in the many other replies, but this worked for me (accessing a windows pro machine):

    • On the machine you are trying to reach, go to Sign-in Options, and deselect ´For improved security, only allow Microsoft Hello sign-in ....´ (I do not see this option on all my PCs, but this is the only one I am having a problem with...)

    Then use Win-L to lock your machine, and then login using your Microsoft account email and password.

    Now go to the other PC, and try accessing it using your Microsoft account email and password.

    I tried everything. Local accounts, ms account, simply would not work. I had to "fix" it by purchasing an NAS box. Now all my pcs can access the networked drives using the same drive letters across the board.

    So far I have not been able to access my USB drive attached to my router. I have edited the credentials several times and it says incorrect userid or password. I have turned off the password protected sharing.

    I am the only one on the network yet I don't have permission to access my drive! I want to use it for backups. It does my little use to backup onto my hard drive or to a device connected to the computer I am backing up.

    Isn't there a way to just disable the credentials check so I can use my portable drive?
