The new Default App Setting is way to advance and confusing which is unecessary complex for home users. I wanted to change the default file type for Photos and Videos but I there is no jpg, png, mp4 types of file type showing when searching to change it's default app. Also I can't change the default app using explorer open with because the checkbox for always use this app is missing for both Photos and Videos. Also there is no Open with the file property too. Help Me Anyone.

Thanks, this worked! I am back to being able to open random links in a private browser rather than in my primary browser with this registry file applied and changing HTTP/HTTPS to use it (which becomes available immediately after applying this registry file). The same general trick could likely be used to make it so a specific browser profile is used to handle links rather than the default profile.

I did make one minor fix to it which I recommend applying to the original gist:

    https://gist.github.com/winhelponline/2f39276cdb1872304f72ecd843476d71/#file-firefox_private-reg-L12

That should end with private_browsing.exe,0" instead of firefox2.exe,0"

Try this registry file. It adds Firefox (Private) to Default Apps.

I can choose a default app for things like jpeg but I cannot choose a default app for https URLs.

Note that there is no option for "Choose an app on your PC" like .jpg has:

I have also tried going into the registry and setting the https handler there, but it seems like Windows is completely ignoring it.

Context: I am trying to set private_browsing.exe as the default browser so when I click links in random apps they open by default in a private browsing window. However, you'll notice that Firefox Private Browsing isn't listed as an option even though it is an app pinned to my start menu:

This was working fine until the most recent update. As of the most recent update all of a sudden all links are opening in my primary FF browser rather than opening in a private browsing window like it was configured to.

Why doesn't selecting a default app for HTTPS links have an option for "Choose an app on your PC"?

Why did Windows stop respecting my configuration with the latest update?

How do I get Firefox's private_browsing.exe to show up in the list of apps that can load HTTPS links?

What God do I have to make a sacrifice to just to safely use my computer?

DOES NOT WORK. Using default programs / apps does not open anything, can't change anything. ALL programs are set to Windows Explorer and it opens nothing.

Good procedure, thanks, seems like they (MS) cleaned it up in one of their W11 updates.
