Can't Change Default Apps Windows 11 (OS Build 22000.120)

I have a new computer with a new OS. Windows 11 Home
I did not install any bloat scripts or any other work arounds.
I installed IrfanView 64-bit.
During installation of Irfanview, I selected to have all image types associated with Irfanview.
Nice. Sweet. Except Win 11 did not allow the action to take place.

When I attempted to open a .png file using File Explorer, it opened in Windows Photos.

I attempted to use Default Apps, but using search, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, and several other image extensions resulted in "item not found."
I then uninstalled IV 64-bit and installed IV 32-bit, thinking that this might alleviate the problem.
Each step, I restarted computer.

I attempted to locate the previously mentioned file types in Default Apps. Not found.

I then went through the process of installing Irfanview 32-bit.

Same results as before.

Restart. I tried individual file associations. Guess what. It wouldn't allow me deassociate from the Windows program.

I then uninstalled Windows Photos. I reinstalled IrfanView 64-bit. Same process as before, during installation, it asks the user if they want to associate file types. I selected yes: All Image Types.

Now, instead of opening in IrfanView, it opens in Windows Print Pictures.

Repeat above processes. I decided to see if by installing Photoshop first there would be a different result.

File types .jpg, .jpeg, and several others mapped to PS, but .png still won't.

I've uninstalled all 3rd Party image and video products and reset default associations.

Your blithe remarks to suat.cini are dismissive and disrespectful.

I do not want to have to go into registry to make all of these changes.

NO it does NOT work!!

You can NO LONGER pick an alternative app after pressing that button on the right you pointed to with an arrow. I have edge as default for pdf files but I can't change it at all. Clicking on "properties" >> "open with.... change" >> then chose an installed alternative application >> then press "APPLY">>then "OK"............. will results in NO CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unreal mendacity of Microsoft. We have finally come to this.

You have been busy progressively making it harder and harder to change default programs for the past couple of months, and now you scumbags have given up all the pretense and simply made it physically impossible to change default at all. This is ILLEGAL. I am a European citizen and cannot be commandeered to use Edge for pdf files. I will contact lawyers and journalists. I will also contact other companies like ADOBE and tell them that Microsoft is DISABLING the ability to use non Microsoft apps from some of its users.

In the mean time I have uninstalled Edge. Will never ever use that program.

There are three commands you have to run from PowerShell: (I only tried in admin mode)

Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.Photos -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage

Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.ZuneVideo -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage

Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.ZuneMusic -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage

First one (suggested earlier, thus the solution now :) ) only works for pictures.
The second command works for videos, and the third command works for audio files.
In case there are other issues... you have to check what default app Windows uses for that. Somehow find out the packagename for it, and replace it in the command (this is how I managed to make this work.)

No restart needed, after these commands, you can set the default apps for images, videos, and music files.

-Right click on file, Open With (other app), and select: always use this. OR:

-Right click on file, Properties, and modify there. OR:

-Settings menu, Default Apps, select the app. OR:

-Settings menu, Default Apps, enter the extension (like .mkv)

(remember, these only worked for meafterentering the commands above)

takypapa - Thank you! Finally the context menu's Open With... Always use this app... shows up on music, image and video files! What a relief.

Please try the second command again:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.ZuneVideo -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage

Microsoft.ZuneVideo is the Movies and TV app....

Can't set the default apps in Windows 11 for most photos and videos....
Totally legitimate install....

What should I do?
Also tried filetypeman, but no luck.. access denied...
