I have a new PC with W10. I decided to use the PIN code, but now I get the message "Something happened and your PIN isn't available. Click to set up your PIN again."

When I click 'Set up my PIN' nothing, the same message reappears.

I looked up the issue on the internet and found that I should login using another sign-in option. However, there is no way to get to another option. The text above is all I see on the screen.

Hello there! I'm sorry that didn't work. You can try this steps instead:

Turn off your PC

Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button on the casing of your PC for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

Do this twice

On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt . . . etc.

Please try each option one at a time, then see of Windows will boot . . .

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Startup Repair

See if Windows startup can repair itself

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - System Restore

Check to see if you have a restore point you can go back to

If you do not have a Restore Point, go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Startup Settings and click Restart

Upon restart, press 4 to enter Safe Mode

Once in Safe Mode, backup your data if you do not already have a backup

Open Device Manager and check to make sure all your Drivers are up to date

Reboot to see if Windows will start Normally

If the above fails, go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - Reset this PC

Choose to keep your files and apps, just your files or to keep nothing

Then start the Reset

Hope this will do the trick

    Robert,

     first how to get into safe mode.   safe mode is AFTER the screen you get when you hit shift restart.   After Troubleshoot. I can't look at the options right now but I think if you pick  the option above Command Prompt and wait a bit, 10 or so options will come up that you pick by entering their number.    This 10 option screen will show you all the boot options and one of those is safe mode, safe mode is not something you can directly pick after Advanced or Troubleshoot like you do with Command Prompt.  Just a word of warning though, I'm pretty sure safe mode demands a pin too, if you have pin's turned on.

 you and I were in very similar situations with Command Prompt.   I was in Command Prompt and I wanted to change some things that normally I would do in Settings.   Command Prompt is pretty active.  i found I could run taskmgr, regedit, cmd, and notepad from command prompt and they would come up.  You can get some commands by saying "start .... ".  I couldn't run file explorer or Settings.  In cmd you can  run command line.  I just googled bitlocker and there are command line commands for it.   I found that net user (add, modify, delete users) would run while I was in command prompt although I'm not sure the commands were taking affect.  

 Incredible if just a user using bitlocker can lock himself out of his machine.   Microsoft needs to review this and the shut off all services situation.  Good luck.  Keep trying, I found I had to do a lot of trials to get my machine back.

    I am not stuck now. Pardon my typos before, what I had to do was use a separate USB keyboard, to enter an alternate login. Both the on-screen keyboard (laptop has a touchscreen) and the built-in laptop keyboard did not work to do this.

    This was actually on my second computer, after I installed the latest updates. On my previous computer, (it was still under warranty) I could not even attempt an alternate sign in.

    Once I logged in on the replacement, I was able to access Windows like normal, but the keyboard still did not work. So I uninstalled as many of the recent updates as possible, and that seems to have fixed it.

    This latest Windows update is a disaster. At least on some systems. I'm now terrified to update Windows on ANY computer.

    Cooprider, I think ... yasir.. is saying you can reset your windows pin on your phone (that's what he means by handset) using your microsoft signon. I've never done that, I'm not sure it works. I will also say that in some of our cases, we know our Pin, it's not giving us a chance to put it in. One thing I noticed is when you are really having the problem that this thread is about "...something happened and ... " (in my case I turned all Services off), the Reset Pin option on the Windows machine you get below the signon doesn't work. When I got my machine completely restored, it looked like the Reset Pin option would really work if I wanted to use it.
